Anthony Johnson knew how horrible slavery was. Most Africans do not get slaves in their lifetime so Anthony is very lucky. It is very surprising that Anthony even has the money to buy everything that he has. -
The Life of Anthony Johnson
Africans were brought over, but not as slaves for life just indentured servants. Originally slaves were not treated as property but as people, but that will soon change. During Anthony's life he saw many things. He saw himself go from indentured servitude to landownwer.He saw his sons struggle for land and wealth. He saw many laws pass changing the way slaves were treated.But worst of all, he saw the Africans being treated inhumanly. -

This was an important event because most Africans do not acquire anything that the English have.Anthony Johnson was a very lucky slave because mosts slaves don't have anything. Anthony having land makes a big difference in how he is looked at. Owning land improved Anthony's social status because the english looked at him like another landowner. -
Act III Baptism of Slaves Doesn't Exempt Them From Bondage (Event III)
Slaves will find it harder to become free because freedom is not based on religion anymore. Slaves will now be in bondage for life, unless there masters set them free or they buy there freedom. The slaves that became Christian would be released in about 20 years of servitude. Slaves will begin losing hope of being free giving the English more power. -

Slaves used to be referred to as people but now they are being referred to as property. The slaves used to be treated as indentured servants. Now if they run away or doing something bad they can get beat ,and if they are killed the masters won't be tried for murder. The slaves will be even more frightenend to run away because they could die being punished. Conclusion
The Africans have been through hard times from 1620-1705. Working, starving, being beaten, and being overworked. The were forced to do everything while the Englishmen sit down doing nothing but watching the slaves work. What would you do if you were one of the Englishman? What would you do if you were a slave? What would you do?
