    Anthony was a Virginia slave who converted from Catholicism to Protestant.He survived a massacre on his former plantation.By 1650 Anthony had his own land and two black servants.in 1654 Anthony wins a court case against an Englishman to win back one of his survants.Anthony 's eldest son could not aquire Anthony's land because he "was a negroe and by consequence an alien."Through out this time of progress there were laws that diminished most of the progress that Anthony accomplished

  • Anthony Aquires Land as a Free slave

    In 1650 he owned 250 acres of land , asmall herd of cattle , and two black servants. This is important because Anthony is no longer dependending on a slave owner. He also has control over is own land.

  • Baptisim Does Not Exempt From Bondage

    Legislators decided that slaves born in Virginia could not become free if baptized. Although masters were still encouraged to baptize their slaves.This is important because Anthony was baptized when he first came to Virginia. Now the time of bondage was basically until death. This helps the slave owners because they will always have a dependent work force
  • Casual Killing of Slaves

    The law basically states that if a slave /servant is killed while being punished, the master will not be convicted for his death.This is important because now masters would have more control over slaves and their actions by basically striking a fear of death into the slaves.
  • Hog Stealing part 1

    On April 16 1699 hog stealing was made a felony. If a negro or slave comitted a first offense of hog staling they would be carried to a justice of the peace county and if convicted will receive thirty nine lashes on the back. For the second offense the slave shall stand two hours in the pillory and have both ears cut off at the nail. This is important because now the slave masters have more control over their slaves. The 1639 and 1640 act was basically leading up to this by taking away the slave
