    Anthony Johnson was a slave who was lucky to buy his freedom. He was lucky to not be affected by some of the different slave laws, but his sons and would have to suffer for them. As slave laws got harsher and harsher, all progress for slaves in Virginia was diminished.

    siete partidas lawsAfter several long years of being a slave, Anthony Johnson finnaly baught his and his wifes freedom. What enabled him to be able to buy it was that he converted to the christian religion and made enough money to buy his freedom. According to the english "Siete Partidas Laws". This shows progress because anthony took advantage of the siette partidas laws and addapted to the sittuations he was put in.

    In 1645 Anthony Johnson aquires his own land to farm and live on. He had agreed to divide his corn with Mr. Taylor since he was the previous owner of the land. Anthony thaught it was a fair deal and was very happy because of it.

    Act twelve states that african childrens position in life is according to there mothers condition. If a slave gives birth to a child that child is immeadietly born into slavery. However if a free african gives birth, the child is free. This shows dimminishing progress because the English men are now saying that they can control the africans children.

  • The first and second offense of hog stealing

    This act shows that if any africans steal hogs they will be punished heavily. For the first offeense of hog stealing, if proven guilty, will be lashed thirty-nine times on his back. The second offense for hog stealing was that the african proven guilty would have his ears nailed to the stocks for two hours and when the two hours expires they'd be cut off. This shows deminishing progress because now that the Englishmen have taken away all africans rights they feel they have to torture them too.

    As the years went by in Virginia slave laws got worse and worse so more slaves were forced to run away. But why blame them, all progress for africans in Virginia was dimminished. Why did this happen and why would people do this?
