  • purpose of police

    point of police was to take over public gatherings of evidence and prosecutions

  • Set up

    Sir Robert Peel set up police force. He was the home sectretary and set up the first Metropolitan Police Act in London. It had 3200 police men. Blue uniform in contrast to army colours. so citizens wouldn't be in fear of them. They were paid 21 shillings a week.

  • Turnover problem

    staff turnover was a problem, of the 2800 constables only 562 remained 4 years later. drunkeness was a major problem later on 1300 dismissed themsleves. 80% dismissials because of their drunkeness.

    A new law said the towns were allowed to set up their own police force. (The Municipal Corporations Act of 1835) Cleared drunks and vagrants off streets, sorting out traffic problems and dealing with dangerous driving,

    New law said that 54 english counties were allowed to set up their own police forces. Bow Street Runners and other forces in London were amalgamated (merged) with the metropolitan police. Jps appointed Cheif Constables. 1 policeman for every 1000 population.

    The metropolitan police set up the first detective force. HUge development because it was the first time you didn't have to solve crume yourself- governement was involved. More trust in police to expand it.

    It was in response to the Chartist movement. The pariah constables-part time, poorly paid or often unpaid and quite laid back. Wasn't prepared to risk life or limb to arrest criminals.
