Sir Robert Peel set up police force. He was the home sectretary and set up the first Metropolitan Police Act in London. It had 3200 police men. Blue uniform in contrast to army colours. so citizens wouldn't be in fear of them. They were paid 21 shillings a week.

New law said that 54 english counties were allowed to set up their own police forces. Bow Street Runners and other forces in London were amalgamated (merged) with the metropolitan police. Jps appointed Cheif Constables. 1 policeman for every 1000 population.
