    It was the first means of Transportation.

    The 13th Amendment was passed by te Senate on April 8th. This Amendment abolished slavery and "involventary solitude except as punishment for crime" (wikipedia)

  • Clara Barton Creates the Red Cross

    During the American Civil was Barton was nurse and true humanitarian. She felt that it was her duty as a Christian to to help soldiers. In August of 1862 Barton gained permission and a $15,000 grant from Daniel Rucker to work as a nurrse on the front line. She spearheaded a woman's worth outside of the home.
  • Chinese Exculsion Act

    This act was a federal law signed by president Chester A. Arthur. The Chinese Exclusion Act was one of the most significant restrictions against free immigration in U.S history. It prohibited all immigration of Chinese labourers and was the "first law implemented to prevent a specific ethnis group from immigrating to the U.S."
  • Dawes Act passed the Congress

    Dawes Act passed the Congress
    This act split up reservations to give to Native Americans as individuals. This was to encourage Native Americans to integrate into white/American culture. Significance: Family and cultural ties were destroyed. land holdings of native americans went from 138 million acres to only 78 million
  • McKinley Tariff Act

    McKinley Tariff Act
    Placed taxes on foreign goods making them more expensive. It drove up prices for farmer equipment and failed to halt sliding agriculture prices.
    The McKinley Tariff was a direct contributing factor to the Panic of 1893. It also led to massive republican defeat in next election.
  • Wounded Knee Massacre

    Wounded Knee Massacre
    South Dakota: Fight broke out between Indian and US Soliders. Followed by a brutal massacre of an estimated 300 indians; mostly women and children. The significance is that Massacre ended the ghost dance movement and the last major battles of the Indian Wars.

    National Economic Crisis. A failure in two companies panicked the stock market. When the financial cris struck, banks and investing firms began calling in loans casuing hundreds of business to go bankrupt across the US. More money was being put into stocks than bonds.
  • Pullman Strike

    Pullman Strike
    Chicago: nationwide raildorad strike that was between the American Railway and the Pullman Company. Pullman cut wages of workers by a third and refuse to reduce the rent. The nations passenger rail service was brought to a standstill. This was the first national strike in history. Federal troops had to put down strikes and violence escalated leading to more strikes. The strikes showed the power of unified national unions.

    Louisianna: Homer Plessy was considered a colored man who sat in the white section of a railroad car. He was arrested and the case went to supreme court because Plessay's lawyer said it violated 13th and 14th Amendment. This case stated that "sperate but equal" is constitutional.

    Cuba Havana Harbor: USS Main exploded killing 268 Men. The Maine was on an offical observation visit. It was found that it was destroyed by a submerged mine. This was the cause of the Spanish American War.
