    -Grandpa (Mohanlal T.) was 11yrs old in when he witnessed India being freen from British clutches on June 15,1947 when Brish House of Commons passed Indian Independance Act & Jawaharlal Nehru becomes 1st PM of India. He said,"the 1st celebration began right at midnight in flurry of fireworks & colors. If India had'nt become independant, my country of origin & bringing up would be living in fear, less freedoms & I wouldnt be born because my patriotic family would perish.

    Newfoundland becomes a part of Canada at Last!
    Newfoundland had been in a long and divisive debate as to whether it should join confederation with Canada, be independant or remain a colony under Britain. When highest votes are for confederation...due to financial debt to Britain for resources and joining Canada would solve thier dilemmas and be more efficient for trading, resources, etc...'stead of being an independant colony. On 31st March, 1947, Newfoundland(British NA colony) joins Canada, now a full nation (Newfoundland and Canada,1949).

    NATOSigned in 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty between 28 states including Canada, U.S., U.K. (Britain), and 25 other Western provinces.The NATO headquarters are located in Brussels, Belgium. The organization is for collective defence for the Western provinces against the members of the Warsaw Pact and Soviets (communists). As quoted, NATO is the "largest peacetime military alliance in the world". (NATO, 1949).

    From 1956 to 1967, the UNEF act was established after it was proposed by Lester B. Pearson (Canadian PM and Minister of External Affairs). The Act is a international military police force to keep peace between rival armies [withdraw British, French & Israeli forces from Egypt, when Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal Company (Suez Crisis) previously in power of Britain and France] (UN News Center).It was UN's first peacekeeping force and a major Canadian contribution.

    Hospital Insurance and Diagnostic Services (HIDS) Act
    The Hospital Insurance and Diagnostic Services Act is a key point in the evolution of our health care system. The Act is provided to "universally" cover certsin health care services under certain circumstances. HIDS was passed in Parliament of Canada in May 1st, 1957 by the federal government. Its purpose/ mission was to "to reimburse, or cost share, one-half of provincial and territorial costs for specified hospital and diagnostic services" (Health Canada: www.hc-sc.gc.ca.).

    On August 25th, 1963: Martin Luther King Jr, an African American civil rights leader fighting racism and slavery...a "worldwide movement for racial emancipation"...gives one of the greatest speeches in history, recognized worldwide in Lincon Memorial on the Will in Washington D.C. during "March on Washington" (The Huffington Post).

    Nations (Egypt during Suez Crisis) were weary of our role as peacekeepers: biased from the Red Ensign of Great Britain & Fleur-de-lys of France on our flag whereas our red maple leaf is a symbol of Canadian identity & nation's unity. Thus in Feb.15, 1965, our national flag (proposed by PM Lester B. Pearson for a national flag) is revealed to Canada (replacng Union flag) in an official ceremony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, ON, representing our distinctive, peaceful nation (Canadian Heritage).

    Riots began on sep.1969 in Gujarat: my fathers uncle (Rajan Tank) 20yrs old when he nearly died in 1of the Muslim bombings & my family had to move out of Ahembdabad & move into another city with less terrorism Gandhinagar) and living beside a muslim family made it worse. At the time, shops were being bombed, houses on fire & vandalisms -damage to both but more to Hindu families.-riots due to religious tensions after India-Pakistan separated...

    Grandparents chose to settle in Canada from India for better education,economic improvements & to escape tensions of religion(Hindu-Muslims in India) to somewhere safer & non violence on ethnicity due to the policy of multiculturism Trudeau gov't put into place in Canada(originally because of French-Canadian crisis of language rights) but also effected other ethnic groups in the long run so that they could be recognized as equal Canadians with thier own distinctive representation to the nation.

    --Aug 4th 1972: Idi Amin (African PM... brutal dictator of Uganda) ordered evacuation of Asian population in Uganada which contained major Hindu-gujarati who had lived there for economic purposes, including my famiy (mom's aunt & her husband).They had to leave all thier income & money & leave immediately with just clothes and returned to India in 1972, at least they were not victims of Amin's secret police, atrocious persecutions and mass killings during the time.     The Summit Series or Canada-U.S.S.R or “Cold War on Ice” is the “most memorable sporting event” in Canadian history. It was 1st 8 game showdown between ice hockey’s 2 superpowers: Canada vs. Soviet Union. The series began on Sept.2nd,1972 in the Cold War: severe feelings of nationalism in Canada & Soviet Union.Canada and Soviets were tied ‘till the last game (5-5) when Henderson scored the goal declaring Canada winner by 34s. changed style of hockey and allowed Eastern Europe in NHL (NHL.com).

    On April 2nd, 1975, the world's 1st largest free- standing structure is completed as its last piece is placed after 2 years of construction when it began in Feb. 6, 1973. The infamous CN tower is 553m communications and observations tower built by Canadian National Railways(CN Tower architect: John Andrew) to tranmit clear TV and radio broadcasts in downtown Toronto,ON,Canada.     My parents immigrated to Canada under the Immigration Act of 1978, an extension to the immigration regulations & points system of 1967.The Act divided immigrants into 3 classes: Independant, Family and Refugee. My uncle immigrated to Canada under "independant" class in 1982. He then sponsored my mother who sponsored by father 5 yrs later under "family class" & my aunt came under refugee.This was a defining moment in my personal history seeing as I was born in Canada after my parents immigrated.

    Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms are enforced and signed by Pierre E. Trudeau & assented by Queen Elizabeth on April 17th,1982 by the Parliament Hall of Canada. The Charter is incorporated into the Constitution Act to protect rights of all Canadians.Its Canada’s most important law,& greatest achievement that built society’s values & identity as a multicultural, peaceful & free nation & ensures basic rights & freedoms (legal, equality, language, minor educational...)     Multinational Force and Observers (MFO Peace Treaty)
    MFO is the 1st independant international peacekeeping organization..."alternative" to UN force. MFO is official from 25th April, 1982 & established when Protocol to Treaty of Peace is signed, to oversee terms of Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel & to withdraw Israeli forces from Sinai, Peninsula, Egypt. MFO headquarters are located in Rome & MFO Force in Sinai Penisula where military personnel from all members of the U.N. are stationed. Canada contributes in 1986 ( www.canadiansoldiers.com).
