    Hitler signed the nonagression pact with Poland to make it easier to attack. The Polish army was defeated within weeks of the invasion.

    Hundreds of Japan fighter planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor. They managed to destory nearly 20 American naval vessels. More than 2,000 American soldiers and sailors died in the attack.

    Nazi Germany and its Axis partners declare war on the United States. This brings America into the war. United States congress declared war on Germany in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

    Codename Operation Overlord, the battle began on June 6 1944. 156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50 mile stretch. The allies attacked and gained a victory that became the turning point for World War II in Europe.
