    Cholera was one of many contagious diseases from the 19th century. It was difficult to handle because it had symptoms like, severe diarrhoea and dehydration, which can lead to shock and death if left untreated. Cholera bacteria (Vibrio cholerae) is transmitted by water or food which has been contaminated with the faeces of people who have the disease. There is no treatment for cholera that guarantees safety, but there are some ways to prevent it like, fluid and electrolyte replacement.
  • Diphtheria

    Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that usually affected the mucous membranes of the nose and throat. The symptoms of Diphtheria were very harsh sore throats, harsh coughs, moderate to severe fever, weakness, and bull-neck swelling/swollen glands. The first pandemic broke out during the 1850-1860 decade. During the breakout over 5,000 people died from this disease. It was very dangerous and lead to many unnecessary deaths because they was not cure discovered yet.

    Influenza is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system. An epidemic for influenza first recognized in 1557. In the 1800's an outbreak occurred that killed 600,000 people in the US and 25 million worldwide. People who suffered from this disease dealt with inflammation, headaches ,fever and pain in the limbs. Severe cases headed to the lungs and caused death. To this day influenza is know to us as the flu. It usually goes away by itself these days but back then it was a large hassle.

    Pneumonia is an acute infection of the lungs that produces coughing, fever, chills, muscles aches, and difficulty breathing in those who suffer from it. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, pneumonia was the leading cause of death due to infectious disease and the third leading cause of death overall. This just shows us how medicine has developed over the years. Discovery of the bacteria occurred in 1881 by an american and a french microbiologist. They impacted medicine and saved many lives.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, tuberculosis severely rampaged throughout Europe and North America. In 1882 this problem was solved by the German microbiologist Robert Koch, who discovered the causes of tuberculosis. The symptoms are severe coughing (sometimes with mucus or blood), nasty chills, fatigue , fever, loss of weight, loss of appetite, and night sweats.
