    Finding Cuba

    Christopher Colombus found Cuba.
  • Dec 20, 1513


    This was the first record of slavery in Cuba.
  • Dec 20, 1514


    The city of Havana is established.
  • Cuba's Capital

    Havana is officially named the capital of Cuba.
  • Britian Takes Over

    Britian took over Cuba from Spain, although this only lasted a short while.
  • U.S.S. Maine Explosion

    U.S.S. Maine was exploded. It was believed that Cuba exploded the ship but it is disputed that it was something inside the ship. Cuba claimed to have nothing to do with it.
  • Starting A War

    The United States declares war on Spain after the U.S.S Maine was blown up while traveling to Cuba.
  • Treaty of Paris

    The war ends between Spain and America with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Spain gives the U.S. Puerto Rico, Guam, and Phillipines. They also agree to let Cuba have their independence although Cuba did not ask to be independent fro Spain.

    Cuba gains independence from Spain and is now a fully independent country.

    Fulgencio Batista served as Cuba's leader for about ten years. He was overthrown by a rebel army in Cuba

    U.S. relinquishes right to intervene in Cuban affairs.
  • Batista Withdrawl

    U.S. withdraws military aid to Fulgencio Batista.
  • Castro

    Fidel Castro leads a Communist revolution and the rebel army overthrows Fulgencio Batista.
  • Soviet Allignment

    Cuba aligns itself with the Soviet Union and their policies.
  • The Bay of Pigs

    U.S. helps attack Cuba in an attempt to trigger an anti-Castro rebellion
  • Removing Tension

    Krushchev agrees to remover missiles from Cuba.
  • Soviet Council

    Cuba becomes a member of a Soviet based Council for Mutual Economic Assistance,
  • Election

    Fidel Castro is elected president.
  • Embargo

    U.S. starts a trade embargo with Cuba.
  • Surgery

    Fidel Castro goes through a surgery and hands over temporary control to his brother, Raul.
