    Comstock Lode

    The comestock was a large mining discovery. There was a whole bunch of silver discovered in Nevada. Miners went to court about who owned what land and how much. Then people from the bank of california ruled and made lots of money. Then a group of irishmen found one of the richest spots of the comstock. The comestock lode made a lot of people rich and was the biggest mining discovery.

    Construction of the transcontinental railroad

    They started at promentary point and the union rail road went to omaha. The central pacific railrtoad went to sacremento from promotary point. They connected the railroad to make it transcontinental. They had some troubles with mountains and weather. They slowed them down and caused deaths to the workers. It was a hard journey but they made it.
  • Homestead Act

    Homestead Act
    The Goverment gave people 160 acres of land. All they had to pay was a small fee. They also had to farm the land for 5 years. Most people couldn't afford to move out west so most of the land wasnt single families. Large land-owning businesses bought most of the land which wasnt what the government had hoped for. The point of the homestead act was to get more people to move out west but unfortunatly it wasn't as successful as they had hoped.

  • Chivington Massacre

    Chivington Massacre
    Colonal John M. Chivington went with his troops and attacked a Native village. Chivington told his men to kill everyone. They almost got that done. Only a few escaped. During the massacre men and women and children were dropping from being shot. Everyone was running and screaming. This is an example of one way that we got ride of the natives so we could have there land.
  • Fort Laramie Treaty

    Fort Laramie Treaty
    There were many treaties being established forceing natives to leave their land. There was a conference at Fort Laramie and it resulted in The Fort Laramie Treaty. It said that the Sioux could live in the Black Hills of Dakota. Both sides signed this treaty. Gold was then found on the land and the government drove the natives out of the black hills that they were promised.

    Cattle Kingdom

    The cattle kingdoms started with the demand of meat. The texas longhorns were perfect. The had good meat and they didnt need much water so they were good for the journey. Cowboys guided the cattle on the cattle drives. These went from texas to different spots along the railroads. They went on for long except they then ended in the later 1870s. The farmers were mad that the catlle were ruining their crops so the barbed wire was invented. This blocked the cattle so the cattle kindom ended.

    Barbed Wire invention
    Michael Kelly was sick of haveing cattle ruin his crops. They would fun through his property during cattle drives. This happened to many farmers just like him. They tried to get the cowboys to keep the cattle away but that didn't work. Michael Kelly invented the barbed Wire fence to keep the cattle away. It was wire twisted and you didnt want to touch it cause it was sharp. This kept the cattle away so the farmers were happy but the cattle and the cowboys were not.

    Oklahoma Land Rush
    The government called everyone to a land rush in oklahoma. Everyone lined up on the border. A cannon shot started the rush and everyone took off. There were districts and the people would claim the districts of land. The re were some problemn though. Some people went early and cheated and some fights occured over who got there first. Though it did help get some people out west.
