  • Roanoke

    Roanoke
    Roanoke was the first English settlement in the new land founded by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1585. The first settlers didn't flourish due to Indian attacks and lack of food. John White went back to England for more supplies when he got delayed from war with Spain. When he came back to the settlement in 1590, everyone vanished. The only thing left was the word Croatoan carved into a tree.

  • Great Migration

    Great Migration
    In the 17th and 18th centuries the groups of people moving into the newly founded land was the Great Migration. This included people from England, Africa, and more all coming to America.

  • Jamestown

    Jamestown
    First permanent settlement led by John Smith. The winter was severely bad, the and was on a swamp, the men didn't work, and they did not have a good grounds with the Natives. John Rolfe and his wife Pocahontas helped the settlement by growing tobacco and soon creating Virginias first profitable export.

  • House of Burgesses

    House of Burgesses
    Elected representatives made up the first legislature, where only property owners could vote representatives to the House of Burgesses. In 1624 Virginia company's charter was revoked and virgina became a royal colony under King James I.

  • Mayflower/ Plymouth/ Mayflower Compact

    Mayflower/ Plymouth/ Mayflower Compact
    Separatists came to the Plymouth Colony for a place to settle in the new founded land. They later established the Mayflower compact which was the first self government plan in the colonies made up by men. In this colony they met Squanto who helped them grow corn and created a treaty with the Native Americans.     New york
    New York was a middle colony settled by the Dutch. The land was owned by the Dutch and could be rented out to tenant farmers. The Dutch and the British then began to fight and had 3 wars. The territory was then renamed for the Duke of York. The Dutch tried to get the land but failed.

  • Massachusetts Bay Colony

    Massachusetts Bay Colony
    In 1630 John Winthrop and 1,000 puritans settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Their Puritan laws that governed the colony were tied with the beliefs of the Puritan Church. People who didn't follow the beliefs were humiliated and banished. Later the colony became a royal colony under the King's control.

  • Maryland

    Maryland
    Maryland was settled as a proprietary colony. The ruler of the colony died before he did anything so his son, Cecil Calvert. The In 1649 the Toleration Act of 1649 gave religious freedom to all Christians living in Maryland.

  • Rhode Island

    Rhode Island
    Rhode island was a new England colony and founded by Roger Williams. Roger Williams founded Rhode Island to create a land where no religious persecution were against Christians.     Connecticut was a New England colony settled by Thomas Hooker. Connecticut was the first written constitution in North America and citizenship was based on land ownership.

    Maryland Toleration Act
    The toleration Act of 1649 granted religious freedom to all Christians living in Maryland. This act was also called The Act Concerning Region and was the second law about religious tolerance.

    A southern colony who grew cash crops, crops that needed lots of labor and were mainly grown for selling. Due to the huge amount of labor needed for these cash crops, African slaves from Africa were sent and sold to do labor.

  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Bacon's Rebellion
    Nathaniel Bacon got together a group of slaves and farmers to retaliate against Native American attacks on the Virginia frontier. Virginias response was to gather an army and fight back. Bacon and his men attack Jamestown and the rebellion ended shortly after bacons death to disease.

  • Pennsylvania

    Pennsylvania
    Pennsylvania was a middle colony settled by William Penn. Penn establish the "holy experiment", a place without a landowning aristocracy where every male received a right to vote and 50 acres of land. Penn's colony became a haven for Quakers shortly after he became one.

    Salem Witch Trials
    The Salem Witch Trials was a period in time when young girls were being accused of doing witchcraft and being a witch. The young girls were put on trial and accused of signing themselves to the devil. 150 people were put in jail, 19 people were hung, and someone was crushed to death.

    Great Awakening/ Englightment
    The Great awakening was a religious movement that swept through the American colonies. Johnathon Edwards who wrote the book "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" made people fear hell and pulled people back to the church. The message of the book spread quickly throughout the colonies and had a great effect on people.

    The Albony plan, suggested by Benjamin Franklin, was a plan to create a government for the 13 colonies. The colonies would have representatives sent to Albany, New York, where they would gather a plan for the French and Indian war.

    The French and Indian war was a 7 year war that began over a dispute over the control of rivers. The war was along the land of New France and British colonies. The French was outnumbered by the British so they joined with the Indians. In the end the British won.

    After the French and Indian war The British created The Proclamation of 1763 which gave the Americans land on the west side of the Appalachian mountains. There was many problems of Colonies not staying on their side and the Americans began to hate the British for not getting the land they promised.
