  • Yalta conference

    Stalin, Roosevelt, Churchill meet and....1. agree on the division of Germany and its capital city Berlin into 4 zones (French, GB, US, USSR)2. Germany will pay reparations, de-militarize and de-nazify3. Poland and other Eastern European nations allowed to have free and democratic elections4. Stalin enter the war against the Japanese and join the UN as a member of the Security Council (veto power)
  • Postdam conference

    Stalin, Churchill, Atlee, Truman (US) meet and now, relation between the Western powers and the Soviets had worsened since Yalta. US and Britain openly argue with USSR about the details of how to divide Germany, the amount of reparations G had to pay, and worried about Russian influence over countries in Eastern Europe.
  • Turman Doctrine

    To support for countries that reject Communism. Gave 400 million dollars to Greece and Turkey.
  • Marshall Plan

    US provided $12.5 billion to help rebuild Western Europe to stop communism, and get money back with interest. They are trying to make their side stronger than USSR.
  • NATO (North American Treaty Organization)

    US and its allies create a mutual defense pact saying that an attack on any member nation will be met with a response of physical force.
  • China falls to communism

    before and after WWII, civil war raged between Mao Zedong’s communist North and Jiang Jieshi’s Nationalist South (1946-1949). South was supported financially by the US and the North by the Soviet Union. Mao had a stronger army and promised land reform for peasants, making him popular. Jiang’s poor economy and his political party was corrupt. As a result, China signs a treaty of friendship with USSR. Thus, westerners feared a Communist campaign to take over the world
  • Soviets test on atom bomb

  • Berlin Blockade

    one of the first act of Cold war aggression that Soviets blocked off access (the Allied controlled zone) to West Berlin. Their aim was to force the Western powers to allow the Soviet zone to start supplying Berlin with food and fuel, thereby giving the Soviets practical control over the entire city. In response, the allies airlifted supplied into the city for nearly a year until the Soviets finally gave up the blockade of the city.
  • Korean War

    North Korea invades the south in 1950 with the use of Soviet weapons and supplies. US forces come to the aid of SK and push NK to back up. Communist China commits 300,000 troops to NK and retake Seoul, but US/UN troops push NK back to original border. After 3 years of fighting the border between South and North Korea remains roughly the same.
  • US develop Hydrogen bomb

    US develop a more powerful nuclear weapon called a Hydrogen Bomb which is 1000 times more powerful than the atom bombs used in Japan.
  • USSR tests its first Hydrogen bomb

    1953, USSR tests its first Hydrogen Bomb and both nations start stockpiling nuclear weapons.
  • Warsaw Pact

    USSR creates its own defensive pact with its member nations in Eastern Europe. USSR reaction to NATO
  • USSR Develop ICMB's

    USSR develops Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICMB’s) and launches the first ever satellite into space called “Sputnik”.
  • US launches their own satellite

  • Soviet Yuri Gargarin becomes the first man to orbit the Earth

  • John Gienn becomes the first American to travel to outer space

  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    US U-2 spy plane photographs missile sites being set up in Communist Cuba, only 100 or so miles from Florida. USSR is secretly supplying and building what the US believes to be nuclear missile silos in Cuba. Threat of nuclear war reaches an all time high.
  • Vietnam War

    Communist North Vietnam supported by the Soviets with weapons and money and South Vietnam supported by the US not only with weapons but also hundreds of thousands of troopsthe US. US feared the spread of Communism and got directly involved in an unpopular war even though they did not have to be involved. Later, US pulled out of Vietnam, did not surrender, just pulled out. Consequently, Vietnam becomes communism.
  • US lands on the moon

  • Detente between US and USSR

    Relaxation between US and Soviet Unions. They decide to do this because Soviet and US needed money and they could not afford the costs of developing weapons. USSR wanted to increase trade with West to share western technology.
  • SALT 1 treaty

    An agreement between Soviets and US. They decided to freeze the number of missiles and nuclear bombs.
  • Joint Soyuz Apollo space flight (US and USSR)

  • New Cold war

    Another arms race start. It starts when the Soviet Union starts to replace old missiles to modern ones.
  • New Cold war ends & change of leader in Soviet Union

    New thinking of the ruler (Mikhail Gorbachev) was more willing than the previous leader's decision.
  • US & USSR singed INF

    INF(intermediate nuclear forces)
    - promising elimination of missiles in Europe within 3 years
  • Berlin wall is down
