The Berlin wall was built to keep East Germans from getting into west Germany so they would stay with the communists. It was a literal concrete guarded wall with barbed wire to keep people from escaping. The construction took only 2 weeks. -

The Germans destroyed the Wall because of escalating protests and the confusion from the East German directive to open the wall. This wall separated the soviets communist east Berlin and the western non communist side of Berlin. This marked the first step towards German reunification.
