  • United Nations Formed

    United Nations Formed

    Representatives from over 50 countries gathered in San Francisco, California, to discuss world peace after World War 2. They were working on the Dumbarton Oaks proposal, the Yalta agreement, and amendments from other countries. When they finally worked all of it out they then drafted and signed the UN charter. This charter helped create international peace and help maintain it.

    Truman Doctrine

    It was the doctrine that said that the U.S. should give support and aid to people who are being threatened by Soviet forces or another communist insurrection. This was first put into action when they wanted to give aid to Greece and Turkey due to them having a rivalry and the fear that if Greece had fallen to communism that Turkey would too.
  • Hollywood 10

    Hollywood 10

    10 of Hollywood's film directors, producers, and screenwriters appeared before the House of Un-American Activities Committee. The Committee questioned whether or not they were working for a communist country and were spies for them. These ten people refused to answer any questions asked about them or about communism. They were sentenced to one year in jail, were fined, and were blacklisted from Hollywood.

    Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan helped rebuild western and southern European countries after World War 2. This was made to help democratic institutions survive the aftermath of the war. It transferred over 13 billion dollars to the economies of the countries.

    Nato Formed

    The Nato is short for The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which is a military alliance. It was mainly created for collective security against the Soviet Union. It was created to provide freedom and safety to all the countries that were in it.

    The Korean War was mainly to stop communism and have American containment. It was fought between North and South Korea and American soldiers helped out. They wanted to help South Korea out because if the Soviets took over that land, they would keep taking more and more.
  • Space Race/Sputnik

    Space Race/Sputnik

    It was a competition between the Societ Union and the U.S. to see who could achieve superior spaceflight capability. It all started to see who had the better nuclear weapons but nobody fired them off. Sputnik was the first artificial Earth satellite launched by Russia. They were the first to send something into space.

    Bay of Pigs

    This was a Cuban-exile invasion. It had a failed landing operation. When they arrived at the beaches of the Bay of Pigs, they were met with heavy fire. The Cuban military sank two escort ships and destroyed half of the exile's air support. The exiles opposed Fidel Castros Cuban Revolution.

    The Berlin Wall goes up

    After World War 1, Germany was separated by Soviet, American, British, and French zones of operation. The whole city of Berlin technically belonged to the Soviet Union, they still split the city in half with the eastern part going to the Soviets. They built this wall to stop the communist population from expanding and also for the Soviets to not lose control over their communist powers.

    The U.S. enters the Vietnam War

    China had become communist in the 40s and had control over the Northern part of Vietnam. The U.S. was afraid that communism would spread into Southern Vietnam, therefore the rest of Asia would soon be communist too. The U.S. sent in troops, supplies, and military advisers to help the South Vietnamese government out.
  • Soviets invade Afghanistan

    Soviets invade Afghanistan

    The Soviets invaded Afghanistan even though they were under the upholding of the Soviet-Afghan Friendship Treaty. Afghanistan was bordering some of the Southern Soviet republics, and they thought that if they invaded it would be easy for them to create a communist-led government. The Soviets lost this battle.
  • Berlin Wall get taken down

    Berlin Wall get taken down

    One of the final marking points in the Cold War coming to an end is that the Berlin wall was taken down. There were political changes and civil demands for them to travel to West Berlin so they took it down. The Cold War was beginning to thaw out for this moment.
