    The Qubec Padlock act in 1937 was enforced by the Qubec provincial goverment to protect against communist propaganda. The act empowerd local sherrifs to close down meeting locations where propsed communist meetings were being held.

    Video[CBC Archives]Igor Gouzenko was a cypher clerk working at the soviet embassy. He deffected on the date above. He exposed the soviet unions espionage plans in order to nucular intelligence. This is said to have started the cold war.

    Canadians in the Korean WarThis was the war in 1950, North Korea against South Korea. North Korea was supported by Communist China. The americans jumped in first to support South Korea over communist agression. Soon late the UN jumped in and sent some members, Canada being one of the. Canadians saw a lot of action before the truce in 1953. In total 1000 Canadians were injured and 406 were killed.

    Vietnam communists attepted to to take over southern Vietnam. France tried to reclaim which resulted in the Vietnamese turning to China to back them up. The US got involved by backing France. The war ended on April 30 1975.

    Suez is a small canal in Egypt that conects the meditarainan see with the red sea. In 1956 Egyptian leader General Nasser took control of Canal Zone. France, Britain and Israel wanted to attempt to regain control over the canal. The Israeli's attacked Egypt. Lester Pearson called for an immediate end to all shooting. Canada provided 800 soldiers. Pearson was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957.

    Sputnik CBC News StoryThe Soviets launched their first satellite that they name Sputnik. The rocket that sent Sputnik to space was dangerous becuase it could also be used to launch nucular rockets to anywhere in North America. Fearing that the military advantage, the Americans replaced their bomber aircrafts with missiles. The Soviets responded by also building missiles.

    North America needed a better defense system against enemy missiles. the North American Air Defence agreement was formed. Canada and America would protect each other. America built several defence installations in the Northwest Territories to create the Distant Early Warning (DEW). Radars along the DEW line could pick up enemy missiles from 4800km away.

    First Flight of the Avro Arrow The Avro Arrow was an supersonic jet aircraft built by Canadians. It was cancelled by John Diefenbaker and it costed over 14 000 jobs. When the project was halted it sparked a long bitter debate.

Kennedy reacted by imposing a navel blockade to prevent Soviet ships from delivering missiles. Soviet ships turned back before reaching the blockade and the threat of war from the Cuban Missile Crisis was over Oct 28 1962

    John Diefenbaker was a speaker, he promised prosperity in Canada. When he was elected Prime Minister. Part of his downfall was his declaration of the support of nuclear warheads and bomarc missiles in Canada for defence purposes. Many western farmers supported him bt voters in Quebec and Newfoundland and big cities did not agree with him

The games had been won equally between the two teams 3-3, but during the last game in Moscow Paul Henderson scored the winning goal for Canada. a Great moment in Canadian hockey history.

It was a shock to the whole nation, and many traveled to Berlin to celebrate. This was such a relif to get out. Instead of before the Berlin wall how East Germany was fleeing into West Germany both sides were going into one another.

The Communism government was not promising enough to the citizens of the USSR. They attempted to remove Gorbachev from government. Overall people were starting to believe more in capitalism.
