    Red Scare

    The Red Scare was a threat posed by Communists in the U.S. during the Cold War between the USSR and the U.S. It got its name the Red Scare since the communists were referred to as the “reds” because of the red soviet flag. People were investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee, as well as U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy went around accusing people of being communists. He went on to ruin people reputations and many lost their jobs because of it.

    Berlin Blockade (lasted for 11 months)

    The Soviet Union tried to force Western Allies to abandon their post-World War II jurisdictions in West Berlin. This made the Soviet representative decided to withdrawal from the Allied Control Council. This then lead to the Soviets in east Germany blockading the railways, roads and water communication to Berlin and west Germany. The United States and Britain began to supply the city of West Berlin with food and other vital supplies by air.

    North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
    The NATO alliance was a military alliance established by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization which sought to create a counterweight to Soviet armies stationed in central and eastern Europe after World War 2. Its original members were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Great Britain and the U.S. It was formed between these countries in case one was to ever get attacked by the USSR, they would come help defend you country.

    Korean War (The war began when the North Korean Communist army crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded non-Communist South Korea.)

    The Korean War was a civil war fought over issues going back into Korea's colonials experience. It was a war thought between North and South Korea. In June 1950 when North Korea, supplied and advised by the Soviet Union, invaded the South. The United Nations, with the United States, joined the war on the side of the South Koreans, and Republic of China came to North Korea’s aid. In this war about 2.5 million people died.

    Cuban Revolution

    It began with the assault on the Moncada Barracks and ended when Batista was driven from the country and the cities Santa Clara and Santiago de Cuba were seized by rebels. This government changed along communist lines, and became the Communist Party of Cuba in October 1965.

    The Space Race
    The Space Race was a race between the U.S. and Soviets to get to space. They were sending satellites to space and competing with one another on how they performed and how the Soviets sent a dog to space and then the U.S. sent a passenger to space. It is said that the U.S won the space race since they where the first to successfully land on the moon. All it was was to show superiority in space flight.

    Suez Crisis
    The Suez Crisis took place in the Middle East. It began with Egypt taking over the Suez Canal which was followed by a military attack from Israel, France, and Great Britain. The Suez Canal is an important man-made waterway in Egypt. The canal is a valuable waterway that controlled two-thirds of the oil used by Europe. In the end, Egypt emerged victorious, and the British, French and Israeli governments withdrew their troops in late 1956 and early 1957.

    USSR shot down an American U-2 spy plane in Soviet air space and captured its pilot, Francis Powers. President Eisenhower was forced to admit to the USSR that the U.S. CIA had been flying spy missions over the USSR for several years. The USSR convicted Powers and sentenced him to 10 years in prison. After less than two years, he was released in exchange for a captured Soviet agent in the first-ever U.S.-USSR “spy swap.”

    Berlin Crisis
    USSR sparked a crisis in the city by cutting off land access between West Germany and West Berlin. Resulting in a year-long airlift of supplies to the stranded citizens in West Berlin. The U.S. is who airlifted food and supplies to West Berlin. Stalin was planning on destroying Germany and turning it all communist. The USSR was also stripping East Germany was its wealth and machinery. Stalin is the one to blame for the Berlin Crisis and after about a year stopped the blockade.

    Berlin Wall

    Was a barrier built by the German Democratic Republic during the Cold War, around West Berlin. It was built to prevent its population from escaping Soviet-controlled in East Berlin to West Berlin, which was controlled by the major Western Allies. It divided the city of Berlin into two contrasting zones. If you tried escaping to the other side of Berlin you where killed on the spot. It came down after the East Belin people started protesting against not being able to travel to the West.

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    This event was nearly the start of a nuclear war between the United Stated and the Soviet Union. U.S. demanded that the Soviets stop construction of newly-discovered missile bases in Cuba, which was just 90 miles from U.S. shores. The U.S president didn't like that and the U.S and Soviets did a lot of negotiating and during that a nuclear was almost broke out between the two countries.

    In the middle of the Cold War, the Soviet Army invaded Afghanistan in order to prop up the communist government of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan. The Soviet Union feared the loss of its communist proxy in Afghanistan. The Soviet Union sent thousands of troops into Afghanistan and immediately assumed complete military and political control of Kabul and large portions of the country. Was a attempt by Moscow to maintain a friendly and socialist government on its border.

    Collapse of the Soviet Union
    The Soviet Union fell part and it became known as Russia. The flag was then changed to the three strips of white, blue and red flag. Soviets where having trouble looking after there own people. The 15 republics apart of the USSR broke away and went there own ways. Gorbachev pulled all of the thousands of military men he had placed around the world. The USSR was falling to pieces and there wasn't much to do and the people weren't happy with the way things where being run.
