Cold War

  • Chinese Civil War (between Jiang Jieshi and Mao Zedong)

    It was a civil war in China fought between forces loyal to the Kuomintang. Led by the government of the Republic of China, and forces loyal to the Communist Party of China.
  • Berlin Blockade

    It was one of the first international crises of the cold war and the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway, road, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under allied control.
  • Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin Airlift was when Western Allies airlifted and took suppplies to people in West Berlin.
  • Formation of NATO

    Communist expansion prompted the United States and 11 other Western nations to form the NATO. The Soviet Union and the Communist nations in Eastern Europe founded a rival alliance, the Warsaw Pact, in 1955.
  • National Security Council Report NSC-68

    It top secret policy paper issued by the United States National Security Council, during the presidency of Harry S. Truman. It was one of the most significant statements of American policy in the Cold War.
  • Korean War

    It was a war between North and South Korea. The United Nations led by the United States of America fought for the South, and China fought for the North, which was also assisted by the Soviet Union. The war arose from Korea at the end of World War II and from the tensions of the Cold War that developed immediately afterwards.
  • President Truman fires General MacArthur

    Harry S. Truman relieved General of the Army Douglas MacArthur of his commands after MacArthur made public statements which contradicted the administration's policies.
  • Formation of Warsaw Pact

    It was a defense treaty among eight communist states of Central and Eastern Europe in existence during the Cold War.
  • Launching of Sputnik

    When the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite was about the size of a beach ball. It weighed about 183 pounds and took 98 mintutes to orbit the earth.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    It was 13 day confrontaion between the U.S. and the Soviet Union over Soviet ballistic missiles deployed in Cuba. It played out on television worldwide and was the closest the Cold War came to escalating into a full-scale nuclear war.
