    In 1791 the Europeans discovered coal in the mouth of Hunter River in NSW by William Briant

  • 2nd Discoverey of Coal

    Coal was next discovered on the south coast of NSW by William Clarke.

  • First Coalmine

    The first coalmine was established in 1801 near the mouth of Hunter River.

  • New settlement

    In 1804, Govenor king made a new settlement near the mouth of the Hunter River and named it Newcastle.
