Clara Barton startyed teaching at age fifteen in her hometwon. She taught for thirteen years. Then she decided she wanted to open a school where education was free, not a private school.

She started her own school in New Jersey and taught there unti 1854. She was twenty eight when she opened the school. She thought good education should be available to everyone.

Barton worked at the U.s Patent Office for three years. (1854-1857) She was let go because of her views on slavery. She wanted slavery to end and her boss saw this as too contriversal.

Miss Barton was a nurse during the war and traveled along with the ambulences from 1861 to 1863. She went to the front lines to help the soilders. She helped the Union side.

From 1861-1865 Clara was the superintendent of nurses. She oversaw all of the other nurses working on theUnion side.

Clara Barton started a relief program for soilders.She could help th men fighting with goods and help their families.

Clara worked to get donations of a variety of goods to the military and she found a way to distribute them. She used trucks and campaignd throughout D.C. and other locations.

After the war, Clara created a program to help find soilders who were missing in action and to discover what had happened to others so they could inform their families.

Miss Barton started the American Red Cross to help soilders, However, now she helps all kinds of people in need. The red cross still operates today.

Miss Barton resigned from the Red Cross. She was 83 years old. She died seven years later.
