On this day the Confederate States of America adopted their own constitution, which was different from the original American Constitution. At this time the Confederate States included Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas.

On this day South Carolina troops began to fire upon Federal Arsebal at Fort Sumpter. This would mark the begining of the civil war. Just months after this Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas would secede from the Union.

On this date the United States congress declared that the purpose of the war was to "Preserve the Union", not to destroy slavery. This caused a lot of conflict to arise in the Confederacy, because these states felt like this was not truley the purpose.

On this date in history The Battle at Antietam began. This battle would be known as the bloodiest battle of the whole civil war. The battle essentially ended with a draw. This inspired hope for many doubtful Northerners.

The Battle of Gettysburg began on this date. The result of this battle was a Union victory with over 50,000 causualties. This put a stop to Confederate movement into Union terretory.

On this day Abraham Lincoln was assassinated while viewing a play. The man who assassinated him was named John Wilkes Booth, who was actually an actor from the performance.

On this day Joseph Johnston, who was the Confederate leader, surrendered to the Union leader, William Sherman in a small house in North Carolina. This surrender officially marked the end of the Civil War.

On July 18th, 1868 Congress ratified the 14th ammendmant, which granted African Americans full citizenship. This ment that African Americans were fully protected by the Constitution of the United States at this time. There were still many cases of discrimination and unfair treatment at the time and in the fututre though.
