  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise
    Henry Clay was involved in the Missouri Compromise (1820), which occurred in Missouri and Maine, as well as in congress where the bill was made. This event took place because if two states were not added into the Union that had opposite opinions about the slave issue than representation in congress would be unbalanced. The Missouri Compromise added Maine into the union (free state) and Missouri (slave state). It also said that anything above the Missouri Compromise line would be free territory.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    In 1846, David Wilmot introduced the idea to ban all slavery in the Mexican Cession territories. Although the bill passed in the House, it did not pass in the Senate. This event took place because slavery was a big problem at the time and the nation was trying to decide what territories and states should be pro slavery or against slavery. This event affected history by angering Southerners who saw the bill as an attack on slavery by the North.

    The Compromise of 1850 happened in congress on January 29, 1850 by Senator Henry Clay. This compromise was made to resolve the issue of slavery and ease tensions between the North and the South. IN the compromise California was entered as a free state,Utah and new mexico voted on popular sovereignty,ended slave trade in DC,fugitive slave act,and Texas giving up clams on new mexico.

    The Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act was passed in congress by congress in 1850. This act was created to enforce the law that required the return of runaway slaves. This Act let officials arrest anyone who was thought or accused of being a former slave. This event impacted history negatively because this made northerners hate slavery even more and made them start to resist the law and also people who were accused never got a trail to prove that they used to be a slave.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a book published by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1853. This book was published because Harriet thought that it was right for everyone to know what slavery actually was like. When this book was published it enticed many controversial reactions from both Southerners and Northerners. Southerners thought that this book was propaganda while Northerners were shocked and started seeing slavery as a major problem. This event helped northerners realize the actual tortures of slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act/Bleeding Kansas

    Kansas-Nebraska Act/Bleeding Kansas
    The Kansas Nebraska Act was passed in Congress in 1854 with the help of Senator Stephen Douglas but was put into law by President Franklin Pierce. This event took place because the argument over slavery continued with Kansas and Nebraska. This Act allowed the people to have a say on the slavery issue with popular sovereignty. This event impacted history by making violence break out where people are fighting and hurting anyone who is not on their side. The violence carried through the nation
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    This event occurred because Dred believed that he was a free man since he was living in a area where slavery was illegal. In this event Scott was not given his freedom. The Court decided that Scott could not sue because he was not a U.S. citizen, living in a free state does not make one free, and slaves are property which are protected by the Constitution. After this event, congress realized that they could not prohibit slavery in other territories, which meant that slavery was legal everywhere.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Lincoln Douglas Debate
    The debates between Lincoln and Douglas took place all over the country. This happened because Lincoln was running against Douglas for Senate. In the Debate, they shared many opinions on issues. Douglas wanted each individual state to decide their stand on slavery. Lincoln’s view was that African Americans should be equal and have the same rights as everyone else. In the end Douglas won the election. This helped Lincoln become a national figure where he eventually ran for president.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid
    This event occurred in 1859 in Harpers Ferry, Virginia with John Brown. This event took place because John didn’t like slavery and thought that the Bible instructed him to do this. Him and his followers attacked the Virginian town. They stole guns and planned to start a slave revolt. This impacted history by northerners being inspired to lead their own slave revolt.
  • Lincoln's Election

    Lincoln's Election
    In this election Bell, Breckinridge, Douglas, and Lincoln fought for office. In this Election Northern Democrats wanted the right of people to vote on the issue and Southern Democrats wanted slavery in all territories. In the end Lincoln won the election. This event impacted history because now the Southerners were very very angry. They now thought Congress and the President were against their interests and now they were ready to secede.
  • Southern Secession

    Southern Secession
    In 1861 South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas were angry that Lincoln had become president had the south secede from the nation and makes their own government called the Confederate South. This event impacted history because now the beginning of the Civil War has started in Fort Sumter when a mortar shell fired from Fort Johnson in Charleston Harbor burst over Fort Sumter. Federal garrison was forced to surrender to Confederate attackers.
