In June of 1860, the Democratic Convention, held in Charleston, South Carolina, nominated Stephan Douglass as the Democratic candidate for the election of 1860. -
In October of 1860, an 11-year-old girl by the name of Grave Bedell writes a letter to Abraham Lincoln. In this letter, Bedell explains to Lincoln that growing a beard would help him win the 1860 election. Lincoln wrote back four days later telling her he was making no promises but he then let his beard grow out over the next month. -
The election of 1860 had four candidates, the Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln, the Democratic candidate, Stephan Douglass, the Southern Democratic candidate, John Breckinridge, and the Constitutional Union candidate, John Bell. Lincoln won in an electoral college landslide. -
Lincoln wins the 1860 election with an electoral college landslide. He received 180 electoral votes. -
Following the election of 1860, the first secession convention is held in Columbia, South Carolina. -
In 1860, John J. Crittenden purposed a compromise that would prevent the Civil War. This compromise stated that 6 new amendments be added to the Constitution that made slavery Constitutionally legal in the southern states. Lincoln vetoed this compromise. -
In 1860, the state of South Carolina officially withdraws from the United States of America. -
Mississippi is the second Southern state to secede from the Union. -
Florida is the third Southern state to secede from the union. -
Alabama is the fourth Southern state to secede from the Union. -
Georgia is the fifth Southern state to secede from the Union. -
Louisiana is the sixth Southern state to secede from the Union. -
Texas is the seventh Southern state to secede from the Union. -
Confederate Soldiers fired on an underdefended union fort. None were killed. This is known as the opening scene of the Civil War. -
Virginia is the eighth Southern state to secede from the Union. -
This is the first major battle of the Civil War. There were a total of about 4,700 casualties. This was a Southern Victory. -
On election day, 1861, Jefferson Davis was elected president of the new Confederate States of America -
This was the first big Union victory led by Ulysses S. Grant -
General McClellan finally attacks the South. He lands his troops in southern Virginia by boat and attempts to fight his way to Richmond. This campaign lasted a little over a month and ended in failure. -
This battle in a historic city halted McClellan's advances to Richmond, allowing the Confederacy to strengthen their defenses. -
This was a very important battle that resulted in a Union victory, however, a total of 23,741 lives were lost. -
Even though it wasn't a very bloody or important battle, it is known for only having one Union casualty. -
Union General David Farragut was successful in capturing New Orleans putting the Mississippi almost entirely in Union hands. This was also done with no casualties from either side. -
In August 1862, Confederate and Union troops once again met in Bull Run but this time was more than four times more deadly. This was, once again, a Confederate victory. -
The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single-day battle in all of American history. This battle showed that the Union could stand up against the South and gave Lincoln the Courage to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. -
After failing Lincoln and the Union three times, General George McClellan was removed from office. -
After firing McClellan, Lincoln selects General Ambrose Burnside and his sideburns as McClellan's replacement. -
President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which stated that all slaves in the southern territories were free under Union eyes. -
After suffering a horrific defeat at the battle of Fredericksburg, General Burnside is fired by Lincoln in January. His sideburns will be missed. -
With a new general in charge of the Union, General Joseph Hooker, the Union hoped to seize a victory. While both sides suffered great casualties, it ended in a Confederate victory which is said to be Lee's greatest victory. However, while riding his horse in the dark, Stonewall Jackson's own men fired on him. -
After being shot by his own men during the Battle of Chancellorsville, Jackson contracted Pneumonia and died 8 days later. -
The Siege of Vicksburg was one of the most important battles of the war. This battle ended in a Union victory, putting the Mississippi completely in Union hands. This siege lasted for about one month and ended on the fourth of July. -
The western part of Virginia, which has remained loyal to the Union, forms its own state. West Virginia. -
The last time the Confederacy invaded the North to seize D.C. but they engaged the Union in a three-day battle which resulted in a Union victory. It was over for the Confederacy, the Union had the high ground. This battle marks a turning point in the war. -
The Battle of Chickamauga ended the Union offensive in Tennessee and Northwestern Georgia. -
With the opening of a new national cemetery, President Lincoln gave a two-and-a-half-minute speech that encouraged the nation to pull together and stay united through hardship. -
This battle was very important because resulting in a Union victory, it put a very important Confederate railroad junction in Union hands -
Outside of Charleston, South Carolina, the first successful submarine attack of the war was performed. -
In March of 1864, President Lincoln appoints Ulysses S. Grant as Commander over the entirety of the Union army. -
This was the opening battle of the "Wilderness Campaign" and, despite suffering more casualties, ended in a Union victory. -

The Battle of Atlanta ended in a Union victory putting a very powerful Confederate city in Union hands. This win also helped Lincoln get re-elected in the 1864 election. -

The Battle of Cedar Creek was fought in Northern Virginia and, once again, despite suffering more casualties, ended in a Union victory. -
This election was against sitting President, Abraham Lincoln, and former General McClellan. -
Lincoln wins the 1864 election with an electoral college landslide. He received 212 electoral votes. The only states who voted against Lincoln were Kentucky and New Jersey, -
The Battle of Nashville ended the large-scale fighting west of the coastal states. This battle ended in a Union victory -
