    South Carolina Secedes from the Union
    After hearing the results of the election, South Carolina secedes from the Union. Making South Carolina the first slave state in the south to secede from the Union.

    First major battle of the Civil War. The Confederates win, shocking the North.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    The Union Wins because General Lee withdraws to Virginia. This is the single, bloodiest battle of the Civil War.

    The armies fought a 3-day battle in July of 1863, on the third day 13,000 Confederates lead by General Pickett was at Union lines. This was a huge mistake on Lee's part, Lee's troops retreated back to Virginia in defeat. This allowed the Union to get their confidence back.

    General Sherman destroyed Atlanta and then sent troops on a 300 mile destructive march to the sea. The troops tore up railroads, destroyed buildings, and burned crops in an attempt to break the will of the South. The Union engaged in total war.
