This was a book about anti-slavery after slavery laws had been tightened up, and with this book created a war, the Civil War.

On April 12, 1861 Fort Sumter had been attacked from the Confederates. The two sides had battle for 36 hours with non-stop firing. The South had attacked Fort Sumter from all sides. After hours and hours of attack and with their supplies and ammunition nearly diminished and seriously out-manned and outgunned. At 2:30 pm April 13 Major Anderson decided to surrender the fort to the Confederates.

This war was one of the first major land battles. The Union had attacked the Confederates and the Confederates had been defending they became rallied up and defeated the Union. This battle had given hope to the South and told the people of the North that it won’t be a easy war.

This battle was fought between U.S.S Monitor and Merrimack (C.S.S Virginia). It was a Confederate plan to break the Union’s blockade of Southern ports. It was the first battle ever fought between two naval ships. This battled had signaled the start of a new era, iron ships, both the Union and Confederates launched over 70 iron ships, ending the era of wooden ships.

General Grant and General Buell had counter-attacked the Confederates after being attacked. They had been able to push them back and were able to defeat them to gain a major victory. The cost of the battle was high though, with all together 23,000 combined casualties, it had reminded the two sides on how hard the war would be.

Pope is driven back and wants to reunite with General McClellan’s army of Potomac. Stonewall is able to shift his way behind Pope’s army and make a defensive line against Pope, General James Longstreet comes around with the rest of Lee’s army and is able to attack the left flank of Pope, driving him back. This is an important win for the Confederates as now General Lee has confidence to attack the North.

The Union had fired and carnage began, there were 15,000 casualties. Major General William H. French and his troops had arrived in order to finish the battle. The Union in three hours were able to push the Confederates back. As night had fallen there were around 23,000 casualties and 3,650 dead. This win for the Union had helped Abraham produce the Emancipation Proclamation.

General Burnside had followed Lee back to Virginia. The Union had quickly moved down Rappahannock to attack, the Confederates were able to get back. Burnside decided to attack anyway and his soldiers were killed by the masses, nobody could reach the Confederates. Burnside called for truce to get his dead and wounded soldiers, the Union suffered 12,650 dead while the Confederates only suffered 4,200.

The battle of Chancellorsville was fought between General Robert E. Lee and Major General Joseph Hooker. It was an attempt by the Union to flank the Confederates, it had ended up in a Confederate win. Unfortunately for the Confederates, Lt. Gen. Thomas Jackson died because he was mistaken as a Union soldier. This was a turning point for the Union.

The two armies had clashed together on July 1, 1863. The Union was bringing in reinforcements, Lee had attacked them but failed to break their line of defense. On the final day of July 3 Lee had attacked the Union center on Cemetery ridge and had held massive casualties. Between the both sides they had lost between 46,000 to 51,000 soldiers. This was an important battle because the North had won and the amount of casualties had stopped General Lee invading the North.

General Grant had tried to capture Vicksburg before but had been unsuccessful, but had redoubled his efforts into capturing Vicksburg. General Grant had defeated Pemberton at Champion Hill and was able to drive the Confederates back. Grant had entrapped Pemberton in 15 miles of trenches and with 70,000 soldiers capture Vicksburg.

The Confederates and the Union had fought for 2 days, and the Confederates won the battle. Though, both sides had sustained a great amount of casualties, Braxton Bragg did not use the victory into deeper pushing the Union back. Allowing the Union to gain reinforcements and beat the Confederates at the battle of Chattanooga.

President Lincoln talks about how the America is the last place for freedom. He urges his fellow citizens to remember what is at stake with this war, to win so that every man, women, and child can be free. He also talked about how the Civil war was a test to the people’s determination and perseverance to survive and keep this great Union going.

This was the first big attack on the Confederates by newly named General Grant. The heavy terrain had helped the South because with the North’s big numbers it was harder for them to navigate the forest and use their advantage. The South also knew the terrain which gave them the upper hand. Two days of a blood-spilled battle resulted in a draw and heavy losses for both sides.

General Grant had attacked General Lee on the road leading to Spotsylvania. Grant had planned to seize the town to stop Lee from escaping South. Lee had been able to get to Spotsylvania faster, thus changing terms of engagement. After a week of fighting Lee had to withdraw from fighting.

This battle was over you could say over two legs. The first battle of Cold Harbor had ended in a Union loss and also General McClellan had to abandon his plans of attacking Richmond. The second battle of Cold Harbor had taken place 2 years later. With the Confederates winning again and being a quite lopsided affair for the Confederates.

After the battle of Antetiam President Lincoln legalizes the Emmancipation Proclomation, ending slavery. This act had also help enlist 180,000 black soldiers to the Union and help win the war. This had ratified the three-quarters compromise that was made when the United States declared Independence.

Lee had sent a letter to General Grant to talk about a surrendering. Lee had arrived at Wilmer Mclean’s home and there Lee had asked for terms of his surrender. With this happening, it signaled the basic end of the Civil war.

It had happened on April 14, 1865 when at a theatre President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head by well known actor John Wilkes Booth. The reason why Lincoln had been killed was, John Booth was angry when General Lee had surrendered. The killing of the president was very huge, and bad for the north, the North was in disarray when Lincoln died.

This was the final battle between the Union and Confederates, even though the war had almost ended after General Lee surrendered. This battle had been one by the Confederates but it still didn’t take away the fact that the war was over. It had showed how determined the both sides had become, accepting nothing less than victory.
