Civil War Timeline

  • siege of fort Sumter

    Cause: This followed soon after the south's secession from the Union.
    Event: this is important because it is the first shots of the civil war and now the war officialsy began.
    Effect: Basically the battle started the civil war it wasn't the conflict there yet is was all the reason that there was high tensions between the North and South but now they were actually fighting. The battle of Fort Sumter is well known as the first battle of the civil war and the rest of the war is the effect of it.
  • Battle of Bull Run/Manasses

    Cause: Confederate troop had fired on union soldiers at Fort Sumter two months earlier and now the Union Army and public wanted to start the war.
    Event: The Union went in with confidence but was surprised with a southern counterattack.
    Effect: the effect of the battle was that the North was left shocked about the war and now the South had much confidence in going against the North even though many people doubted them. the North and felt that they had failed their fathers who started the country
  • Battle of Antietam

    Cause: Since General Lee thwarted Mcclellans plans to lay siege on Richmond he thought to attack when the Union had low morale
    Event: General Lee's troops were tired hungry and overall worn-out also they were outnumbered.The Union was able to win the battle.
    Effect: The Union was at an advantage because the South had to retreat but general mcclellan didn't attack when he had a clear opportunity to take advantage.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    cause: Lincoln always felt that slavery was bad but the war was only fighting to preserve the union not to abolish slavery, Lincoln wanted to change the object or goal of the war.
    Event: Lincoln said that all slaves were now free but the confederacy said that they didn't have to listen to him because he is not their leader.
    Effect: There was a new goal for the Civil war. now it was to end slavery and to restore the Union. Also now previous slaves were fighting with the Union in groups such as 54
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Cause: General Lee had a big win at chanclersville he had much confidence and decided to launch and attack on the north.
    Event: Lee saw Union forces in Gettysburg when searching for supplies and he decided that he wanted to attack before more union soldiers could arrive at the battlefield. The battle lasted three days and the Union won.
    Effect: The confederacy lost all hope and was depressed while the mourned the many casualties of the battle.it was only a matter of time before the Union won
  • Shermans march to the Sea

    Cause: Lincoln wanted general sherman to end the war because it had been going on too long and people were getting sick of it and Lincoln called for total war.
    Event: sherman went into the south and destroyed everything in his path leaving cities in ruin.
    Effect: the south had been ruined and was forced to end the war but they were in such ruin that they would have a very hard time coming back to what they had before the war.
  • Lee's Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    Cause: total war had forced the South to sign a document saying they lost the war not treaty or anything just the they lost.
    Event: North and South representatives came and the south stated that they lost the war.
    Effect: the war was now over but both sides had negative effects. The North started off low but in a pretty short amount of time they were back in the booming days. on the other hand the south had a very hard time recovering due to banks being destroyed and loans not being paid back.
