    Five laws were passed to appease the tension between states over slavery. Califronia joined the Union, Washington D.C. no longer participated in the slave trade, and a border dispute was solved between New Mexico and Texas, were some of the issues resolved.

    Allowed the Kasas-Nebraska territory legal to practice slavery
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    John Brown lead an attack against five pro-slavery men and killed them in the Kansas Nebraska Territory
  • The Dred Scott Decision

    The Dred Scott Decision
    The Supreme Court Ruled slave owners could move their slaves West and into free states because slaves were property not humans, therefore they weren't granted freedom.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    Lincoln-Douglas Debates
    Series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas for presidency. The Debates largely included issues related to slavery.
  • Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry
    John Brown organized a group of 21 men to attack Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. The plan was a complete failure and those who were not killed in the attack were later tried then executed.
  • Lincoln's Election

    Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States. Due to his win, southern states seceded from the country because they believed Lincoln was an abolitionist.

    The site of the first shots fired of the Civil War. Confederate soldiers bombarded the fort.

    The Union army suffers a defeat at Bull Run against Confederate General Thomas J. Jackson, also known as "Stonewall".

    First major battle fought on Union land. It was the bloodiest day in American history and was declared a Union victory because the Confederate army retreated.
  • Emancipation Proclamaiton

    Emancipation Proclamaiton
    Freed all slaves in the Confederate states but slaves in the border states weren't freed. This helped the Union gain support from other countries such as Great Britain and France and gained more soldiers due to the newly freed blacks.

    The time period in which the South tries to reconstruct itself, and the country starts pulling itslef back together. Laws for freed African-Americans were made.

    Gettysburg and Gettysburg Address
    Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle in American history and was the turning point of the Civil War. The Gettysburg Address was a speech given by President Lincoln to remind people why the Union had to win, and to speak out about equality for all.
  • Andersonville Prison

    Andersonville Prison
    Prisoner of War camp in the Confederate states used to hold Union soldier prisoners. Due to Lincoln's refusal to exchange prisoners the camp became extremely overcrowded. Approximately 28% of soldiers in Andersonville died in the prison.

    General Lee surrendered to the Union at Appomattox. The end of the Civil War.
