    Election of 1860
    Abraham Lincoln won the election. The south did not vote for him and became upset. This is significant because this is the cause of to why the war had started... because Lincoln won the election of 1860
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina Secedes
    South Caroline secedes because Lincoln won the war. This is significant because this showed how upset they were towards the election. This causes rage in the states.
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Attack on Fort Sumter
    South was still upset to why Lincoln had won, making them threat to secede from the country. Lincoln told them he was going to supply the fort. South attacked the Union before it could arrive at the fort. This is significant because it started the Civil War.
  • Battle of Bull Run/Manassas

    Battle of Bull Run/Manassas
    The first official battle of the war. People wanted to watch because no one had seen in person before. Confederates won this war, Union did not feel the need to try because they had larger numbers. However, this is significant one, because it is the first battle, and two, the Confederate won.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Battle of Antietam
    Bloodiest battle in American History. It happened off guard. Lee (Confederate) wanted to invade the north from behind, they did and did not end up winning. The Unions leader, McClellan, was fired because he did not chase after the Confederate withdrew. This is significant because the Union leader could've been able to kill Lee which is the leader of the Confederates.

    Emancipation Proclamation
    The EP is where Lincoln declared all slaves free. Although he did, not all actually were. He wanted to keep peace with the border states because they were with the Union so he allowed them to keep their slaves. The EP also allowed African Americans to participate in the war. The significance is slaves were freed which is the cause of the war in the first place.
  • 54th Massachusetts Fight at Fort Wagner

    54th Massachusetts Fight at Fort Wagner
    The first battle containing African Americans. They were recognized for their courage and bravery. They did end up loosing but again, recognized. 54 soldiers died that day. Significance is that it was the first battle they wore blue and fought for our country.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    Battle of Fredericksburg
    McLellan was replaced by General Burnside. Burnside thought it would be a good idea to attack Lee and take Richmond. The Confederates got the high land meaning the union lost. Significance is that the Union is running out of time to find a good gernal
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Battle of Gettysburg
    Lee tries to invade North again because it was a success the first time. Rumors started going around saying that the South was coming. Troops heard of this rumor and got prepared. For three days they fought. The significance is that if the North hadn't figured out that the South was coming, the Confederates probably would've won and who knows after that.

    Gettysburg Address
    Abraham Lincoln gave a speech to appreciate all the lives that were lost. It was 272 words total and it one of the most famous speeches ever given. Its so important because it showed that the president cared and did understand. Significance is that the president was going good and understood the things he needed to do.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    Battle of Vicksburg
    Last battle that completed the Anaconda Plan. This battle gave control to the Union to cut off all resources within the Mississippi river. The significance is that Union had control in a battle for once.
  • Sherman’s March to the Sea

    This was a total war. Sherman tore up rail lines, crops, burned and looted towns. Total war is where you just don't eliminate troops but everything else that supports them. Significance is that many innocent people died.
  • 13th Amendment Passed

    13th Amendment Passed
    The 13th amendment is where is abolished slavery, make the 3/5 compromise not a thing, and prohibited involuntary servitude. Lincoln passed this amendment but did not make official until he died. Significance, slavery ended and that is what started the war.
  • Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
    Civil War ended where it started. General Grants was very respectful, his goal was to make sure the fighting stopped and everyone returned home with peace. Significance, the war ended in a good way.
