    The south wasn’t satisfied because they believed Lincoln was going to abolish slavery. Lincoln opposed slavery and with that he made it no more after years of blood shed. Although Lincoln was believed to be an abolitionist, his intentions weren’t to end slavery. His goal was to hold the union as one (“Voice of America - Learn American English with VOA Learning English.”).
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina Secedes
    South Carolina ended up seceding from the federal union on December 20, 1860. The success of Lincoln during the presidential election of 1860, which triggered the cries across the slave holding south (U.S. National Park Service).
  • Confederation Formed

    Confederation Formed
    February of 1861, some representatives from the 6 seceded states met in the town of Montgomery to formally establish a united government which they named the “Confederate States of America”. On February 9, Jefferson Davis from Mississippi was selected the first confederacy president(Editors History.com).

    Upon hearing about the South's new ironclad ship, the North hurried to build their own. With the help of inventor John Ericsson, the north quickly built the Monitor. Virginia was destroyed by confederate soldiers when the union took over the port of Norfolk, Virginian in 1862. The monitor sunk during the storm off the coast of cape hatteras (“American Civil War”).

It also showed president Lincoln that the confederate forces have an issue with it. As the fought and a slave appeared to them they would have them join the union (American Battlefield Trust).

    President Lincoln issued the proclamation on January 1, 1863, yet as the nation approached its 3rd year of bloody war. The proclamation declared that all personal held as slaves within the rebilous states are and henceforward shall be free (National Archives and Records Administration).
