  • Creation of Confederacy

    This event sparked the creation of the civil war. This occurred because the southern states believed they should preserve slavery and states rights.
  • Battle of Fort Sumner

    This was the first battle of the war. This event socially separated the two sides because of their different views.
  • Battle of Bull Run

    This event ended in a confederacy victory and was the first major battle of the war. It created political pressure to begin offensive operations against the other side.
  • Monitor vs. Merrimack

    This was the most important naval battle of the war. ships USS Monitor and CSS Virginia destroyed eachother resulting in an indecisive stalemate. this affected each side economically because of the damage done to each ship.
  • Battle of Antietam

    This battle was the bloodiest one of the war. It resulted in tactically inconclusive and it showed Lee's rage for the war.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    This was an executive order issued by Abraham Lincoln. It stated that individuals within the confederacy are free. This created many issues for it angered the confederacy greatly.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    This was the bloodiest battle of the war. This battle socially showed how dedicated each side was to winning this war.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    General William Tecumseh Sherman led a march from Atlanta to Savannah. They destroyed everything in their path creating a economic problem for the confederacy.
  • Gettysburg Address

    The Gettysburg Address was given by Abraham Lincoln in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In it he talked about human equality and how the Civil War was progressing.
  • Election of 1864

    The election of 1864 included Abraham Lincoln and George B. McClellan. The results of this election determined how the rest of the war would play out. Lincoln ultimately won by a landslide.
  • Siege of Richmond

    During this war Lee made decisions that ultimately resulting in a union victory. His decision killed thousands of his men creating social tensions between Lee and Grant.
  • 13th Amendment

    This amendment made slavery and involuntary servitude illegal creating a setback for the confederacy and forcing them to change their way of life.
  • Freedmen's bureau

    This was a US government agency established to aid recently freed slaves help adjust to their new life.
  • Appomattox Courthouse

    This is the spot where the war ultimately began and ended.
  • Assassination of Lincoln

    Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1864 by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre.
