This was the start of the civil war because the union occupied the fort that the south claimed to be part of the confederacy. the south laid siege for 34 hours until the union surrendered. The importance of this battle was that the south had now declared war by attacking federal property. -

The Government collected 3% tax from people earniing between $600-10,000 and 5% tax from people earning above $10,000. The importance was that this was the first time the government taxed peoples income to fund the war. -
