    South attempted to infiltrate the Union's capitol, Confederates failed and switched to defense. Was the turning point of the war.

    Final major military action in the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. The Confederates surrendered. The people of Vicksburg did not celebrate Independance Day for 80 years after.
