    The Civil War Begins/Attack On Fort Sumter
    Presedent Lincoln planned on sending supplies to Fort Sumter -located in South Carolina. He had alerted the states in advance in order to avoid any hostile feelings from the state, However, South Carolina thought that this was a trick and they felt very threatened. The commander of the fort (Robert Anderson) was asked to surrender. He offered to surrender only after his supplies had ran out, this offer was shut down. Shots were fired, and with the first shot, the Civil War had begun,

    Between April 17th 1861 and May 20th 1861, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina (in that order) went through succession from the United States.
  • The First Battle of Bull Ran

    The First Battle of Bull Ran
    The First Battle of Bull Run had the public demanding General-in-Chief Winfield Scott to advance onto the South before his troops had been trained well. Scott ordered the Union General Irvin to go on to go up against the Confederates in South Carolina. McDowell's troops ended up in a panicked retreat back to Washington. They clearly were not well enough trained to go onward to battle to Confederates. This battle was also faulty due to both sides wearing the same colour.

    This battle -which took place in Chesapeake Bay- changed naval warfare forever. Confederate ship USS Montier took on Union ship USS Merrimack. There was no winner or loser in this battle, and was considered a draw. It made wooden ships not be an option anymore, and brings in the new steel warships.

    Union General Ulysess S. Grant and his troops are surprised in the town of Shiloh in Tennessee. The battle resulted in 13,000 Union casulaties and 10,000 Confederate casuaties. This was more American casualties than all other American wars combined.

    The Seven Days Battle consisted of 6 battles that took place over a seven day period. Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacks Union General George McClennan near Richmond, Virginia, McClennan ended up retreating due to the huge amount of casualties, resulting in a Confederate victory,

    The Second Battle of the Bull Run was an outstanding victory for Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, and caused Union General John Pope was completely blamed for the Union loss and was relieved of his duties following the battle.

    The Battle of Antietam is known as the bloodiest battles of American history. It originally started as Confederate General Robert E, Lee wanting to capture Maryland. It was apart of the Maryland Campaign. He did not succeed and ended up retreating back to Virginia. Ended with over 26,000 casulaties on either side.

    President Abraham Lincoln issues Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation which stated his intentions to free any slave in a state that was captured by the Union.

    Union army under General Ambrose E, Burnside suffers a tremendous defeat at the battle of Fredricksburg in Virginia, This battle caused the Union 13,000 casulaties.

    President Abraham Lincoln issues to Emancipation Proclamation. This frees slaves from states captured by the union, and allows enlistment of African American men. This however did not completely eliminate slavery from the nation.

    Congress put the first military draft into effect. It stated that every man must fight in the army or pay the government $300 -or a substitute that would suffice. It was very unpopular and caused riots in New York.

    The battle at Gettysburg took place for three days starting on July 1st and continuing until the fourth. The Union, under the command of General Meade defeat the confederates under the command of General Robert E. Lee in Gettysburg, Pennsylvnia. This battle is known as being one of the bloodiest, as well as marking the furthest advance of the Confederate army into the northern part of the United States.

    Battle of Vicksburg
    Starting on May 18th, 1863, General Ulysess S. Grant surrounded the city of Vicksburg and trapped the Confederates under the control of Lt. General John Pemberton. After a long seige, Vicksburg was surrendered by the Confederates. It is known as being one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war.

    When President Lincoln tried to introduce conscription (Military Drafts), riots broke out in New York, among other Northern cities. In New York alone, nearly 120 men, women and children were killed (mostly black) before order was restored by the Union soldiers who were returning from Gettysburg.

    Following his capture of Atlanta, Union General Sherman goes on to march to the eastern sea board conferderate territory so that the Union can be surrounding the Confederate territory, Sherman killed anyone who stood in his way to victory.
