    South Carolina,Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas all secede after Lincoln is elected president. Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina threaten to also leave.

    South Creates a Government
    At the Convention of Montgomery the seceding states made the Confederate Constitution. Jefferson Davis was the temporary president until the south could have an election.

    Lincoln was inaugurated and stated he had no plans to end slavery in slave states but he would not accept seccestion.
  • Fort Sumter

    Lincoln attepmted to send supplies to Fort Sumter and in advance notified the state. South Carolina however believed it was a trick. Anderson was told to surrender but refused. The Civil War then began with shots fired on the fort.

  • Federal Tax

    Federal Tax
    Congress passed the first Federal Tax on income. This tax collects 3% of the income of people earning more than $600 a year but less than &10,000. If you made more than $10,000 you were taxed 5%.
  • Tensions

    Late in 1861 tension grew between the United States and Great Britain because the British were talking with the south. A union warship removed two Confederate officals who were on their way to Europe. Britain sent troops to Canada and threatened war unless the Confederate officals were freed. Lincoln ordered them to be released.

    Congress pased an act that created a national currency which they called "greenbacks" because of the color. The money was not backed by gold, but said it was acceptable for payment of public and private debts.

    The Confederates attacked The Union at Shiloh, Tennessee. The Confederates retreated and the Union did not follow them.

    Congress let Afrian Americans to join the military.

    Gerneral Lee's confederate forces were caught by General McClellan. This battle was the bloodiest of the war. There was no clear winner, but since General Lee went to Virginia, McClellan was considered the victor.

    Conscription Act
    The Conscription Act made men from ages 20-45 liable to have to go for military work. If you payed a fee you did not have to do any service. This angered poor people who couldnt afford this fee.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

     Battle of Chancellorsville
    A Union General crossed the Rappahannock River to attack General Lee. Little did they know General Lee split his troops to attack the Union in three places. The Union then withdrew across the river.
  • Battle of Chickamauga

     Battle of Chickamauga
    Union and Confederate armies met on the border of Tennessee and Georgia. After the battle the Union retreated to Chattanooga.
  • Battle of Cold Harbor

    Battle of Cold Harbor
    Grant attacked the Confederate army at Cold Harbor. He lost over 7,000 men in twenty minutes. Lee suffered less deaths, but his army never recovered from Grant's continual attacks. This was the Confederates last clear victory of the war.
  • Medical Care

    Health and medical conditions in the North and the South were horrible. One in four Civil War soldiers did not survive the war, but diesease killed many of them. Poor nutrition caused dysentery, typhoid, and malaria was spread by mosquitoes. Many also died from pneumonia. Union soldiers were more likely to die in camp or a hospital than on the battle field.
  • Prison Camps

    Prison Camps
    Confederate Soliders that were captured were sent to prison camps throughout the North such as Point Lookout in Maryland and Camp Chasein Ohio. The South also had prison camps wherever the was room.
  • Richmond

    Richmond
    General Lee attacked General Grant's forces in Petersburg, but lost. They attacked and lost again on April 1. On April 2, Lee left Richmond which is the Confederate capital, and went west to join with other forces.
