  • First Bull Run

    First Bull Run
    -Confederate Victory
    -Known as the First Manassas
    -First major land battle in the Civil War
    -Union moved towards Richmond and got attacked by the Confederates
    -They realized the war was going to be much longer and bloodier then expected
  • Peninsula Campaign

    Peninsula Campaign
    George B. McClellan replaced Winfield Scott as general in cheif of the union army in November 1861. March 1862, Lincoln removes McClellan as general in cheif due to hesitation. May 31, Joseph E. Johnston led his forces in an attack on 2 federal forces. Johnston is severialy injured. Robert E Lee replaces him in command. Lee attacks on July 26 witha force of 85,000 soilders. McClellan retreats and says his force was to small although he out numbered Lee's force. Union morale plumets.
  • Hampton Roads

    -Tactical Confederate victory, but a strategic Union victory
    -Also known as the Battle of the Ironclads
    -Confederates took out two ships
    -Second day Union destroyed the Confederate naval fleet
    -Worldwide attention was brought to this battle.
  • Shiloh

    Shiloh
    On april 6, 1862 the south launched an attack on Grant's forces in southe western Tennessee. After initial success the south couldnt hold their postion so the union won. Johnston was mortally wounded on the first afternoon. The battle ended on april 7. Confederate lost this battle. Shiloh National Military park is in honor of this battle.
  • Vicksburg

    Vicksburg
    Union naval expedition, May-June 1862, failed. Union attempt to take the fort on land failed in December 1862. May 18, 1863 Grant arrived at the rear of Vicksburg. Two failed assults in may. Near starvation and low on ammo Pemberton surrenered the city to the north.

    -Lee rushed his troops to dig in positions in the hills south of the Rappahannock before bulk of Burnsides army could arrive

  • Spotsylvania

    Spotsylvania
    William sherman wnted to move his army to Georgia , Grant ordered his army to flank General Lee's army at the Spotsylvania courthouse. On May 11 the confederacy made a stand at the yellow tavern, near Richmond. On May 12 the union nearly split Lee's army in half. The union won. The confederacy was greatly impacted.
  • Wilderness

    -On the morning of May 5, 1864, the Union V Corps attacked Ewell’s Corps on the Orange Turnpike
    -Fighting was fierce but inconclusive as both sides attempted to maneuver in the dense woods.
    -On May 7, the Federals advanced by the left flank toward the crossroads of Spotsylvania Courthouse.
  • Petersburg Campaign

    It was a series of military operations. Petersburg was an importnt rail center 23 miles south of Richmond. Union captured Fort Harrison on Sept 29, 1864. Confederates friven back on March 25, 1865 at the Battle of Fort Stedman. On April 1, 1865 the battle of Five Forks occured. ON April 9, 1865 the south surrendered.
  • Mobile Bay

    Mobile Bay
    By August 5, 1864 Mobile Bay in Alabama was the most important port left on the Gulf of Mexico. It was Protected by Fort Morgan. While Farragut's union fleet was sailing into the port one his ships hit a mine and sank. Farragut cried out "Damn the torpedoes, Full speed ahead." August 23 Fort Morgan Surendered.
  • Sherman's March

    Shermans troops captured Atlanta on September 2, 1864. Then he set out for Savannah. on November 22, 1864 the south fled from a battle destroying the own towns and possesions. Sherman and his troops arrived to an unprotected Savannah. In april his troops and him set out to pillage towns on their way to south carolina. The confederacy surrenered ans the war was over.
  • Appomattox

    -Lee surrenders to Gran in Appomattox
    -Virtually ends the entire Civil War
  • Lincoln's Assassionation

    Lincoln's Assassionation
    On April 14, 1865 at 10:15 p.m. John Wilkes Booth crept up behind President Lincoln with a .44 caliber single shot Derringer pistol and shot him in the head. Immediantly after John wilkes Booth jumped onto the stage and shouted "Sic Semper Tyrannis." "Sic Semper Tyrannis" was the Virginia motto and it means , thus ever to tyrants. President Lincoln was pronounced dead at 7:22 a.m. Lincoln's vice president was Andrew Jackson. On April 26 Union troops surrounded Booth and killed him.
