Illness was very common especially for new recruits. Poor sanitation cause these illnesses which killed more men than enenmy bullets. Day and night they were under strict orders. Jobs that required lots of practice amd discipline. Soldiers spent a lot of there time waiting and being bored if you had the right job.

Fathers and sons were taking from their families to fight and the mother and children were left to work for themeselves. 620,000 of the fathers and sons who went to war never returned. If they were to return they were usually wounded and needed constant care.
