    Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the united states. He recieved only 40% of the popular vote but he still won against the other three candidates.By the time of Lincolns inauguration seven states had seceded.This event affected the Civil War because Lincoln did not approve of slaves and the south wanted to be able to have slaves so the south seceded from the country.

    Texas becomes the seventh state to secede from the union. The Texans who voted to leave the union did so over the objections of their govener Sam Houston.This affected the civil war because when texas seceded it added one more state to the union.
  • Houston kicked out of office

    Sam served as a US Senator from Texas. During his term, Houston decided to run for the governers seat. He won and tried to stop Texas from seceding from the union. He failed, and when Texas did seceded, Houston was kicked out of office.
  • Battle at Fort Sumter

    On April 12, 1861, General P.G.T. Beauregard, in command of the Confederate forces. Opened fire on the Union garrison holding Fort Sumter. On April 13 Major Robert Anderson, garrison commander. Surrendered the fort and was evacuated the next day.

On New Year's Day four Confederate gunboats appeared, coming down the bay toward Galveston.The CS Bayou City and the CS Neptune, sailed from Houston to Galveston.A three-hour truce was called but the Union Fleet Commander ignored the negotiation offer, attempted to destroy the grounded Westfield.

Lee attacked the Union center on Cemetery Ridge.Lee's second invasion of the North had failed, and had resulted in heavy casualties.An estimated 51,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, captured, or listed as missing after Gettysburg.

It was a expidetion comprised a series of battles fought along the Red River in Louisiana.The campaign was a Union initiative, fought between approximately 30,000 Union troops.Red River Campaign, which included the largest combined army-navy operation of the war, was the last decisive Confederate victory of the war.

    The Battle of Palmito Ranch is generally reckoned as the final battle of the American Civil War. The battle was fought on the banks of the Rio Grande, east of Brownsville, Texas. Union and Confederate forces in Southern Texas had been observing an unofficial truce.When Union Colonel Theodore H. Barrett ordered an attack on an enemy camp near Fort Brown, for reasons unknown. (Some claimed that Barrett was eager for his first chance of action before the war ended.)
