    Abraham Lincoln was elected president November 6,1860. He previously was in the Illinois legislature and lost an election for the U.S. senate. Nevertheless he won a fierce election and became the first Republicsn president ever. In hs presidencey he lead the Union to victiry in the civil war. As a result of his election South Carolina seceded with many southern states following after that.

    TX secedes from the Union
    When Lincoln became elected president many Texans felt threatened regarding the future of slavery. Mainly because when Linlcoln was elected 1 in every 4 families owned slaves. Texans urged Sam Houston to hold a convention regarding their future. Houston being a dedicated man to the Union forestalled the convention fearing the future results. When the Convention finally did take place Texans voted to secede from the Union with a vote in favor of 166 to 7.

    Houston kicked out of office
    Sam Housuton was very loyal to the Union and didn't agree with Texas seceding from it. When Texas finally did vote to secede they asked Sam Houston to pledge allegiance to the confederate states of America. When he refused the treatened to kick him out of office so he resigned as well as being thown out. He is one of the only govenors to be thrown out of office twice.

    When Union forces were trying to get out of harms way they fled to the fort. Conferderate forces soon after surrounded the fort and demanded that they retreat. When Union general Anderson refused the tension began to build. Now running low on food, suplies, water, and men Anderson still refused to retreat. Conferderate troops finally opened fire on the fort and Anderson surrenderd the fort. The confederates one the battle and it has great significance for being the first battle of the Civil War.

    This battle is known as the most important military event in Galveston's history When Confederate forces began urging The Union out of the Galveston harbor they used blockade runners to sneak past and attack the large blockade Ships. The Confederate army forced the Union out with only 26 casualties but cost the Union 150 men. This battle is significant because the Confederates were able to come and go in the harbor with men and supplies and have possession of the harbor.

    A Union victory that lasted three days, this battle had it been one by the Confederates would've changed the course of the Civil War drastically. On July 1st Confederate forces converged on the town of Gettysburg from the West and North, driving the Union back. That night reinforcements came for both sides and on the 2nd the fighting continued,and on the 3rd the Union finally overtook the Confederates. This battle is significant because it prevented Unionist to call an end to the war.

  • The battle of Sabine Pass

    The battle of Sabine Pass
    One of A few Union attempts to overtake Parts of Texas during the civil war, the battle of Sabine Pass was a land versus sea battle. The Texans were extremely outnumbered having around 50 Irish born Confederates against 5,000 Unionist . With these stakes the Confederates still defeated the Union and captured 300 of their men. This battle was significant because the confederates were still able to obtain the pass and it proved that even a small amount of men could take the Union.

    The Red River campaign was a Federal attempt to capture Shreveport, Louisiana and divide the Confederacy’s Transmississippi West. General Grant was not for the campaign but allowed it to go on with set deadlines. During the campaign there was much confusion over who was in charge. The confederates were faced with keeping control over the Louisianaterritory , and the Union was faced with army Generals not agreeing on the campaign.

    The End of the Civil War
    The Union had won and the Confederates had taken a beating in Missouri and Kansas. Reconstruction was going to be harsh, but the South did begin to get treated better by people in the south. They lost their "slave property" and their own government and laws. Though they were not ecstatic about the end of the war but generals like Robert E. Lee believed that further fighting would be useless.

    The battle was fought and won by the confederates in South Texas. This was the last clash of arms in the civil war even though the war was technically over. On the first day the Union evacuated under pressure, but returned the following morning moving toward their destination of Palmito Ranch. But the Confederate troops attacked, again forcing the Union troops to evacuate for good, but this time with a good number of casualties. It was significant for being the final battle in the civil war.

    Juneteenth commemorates June 18 and 19, 1865. June 18 is the day Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves. This day is significant because it shows slaves rights beginning to change after the civil war. Soon after Juneteenth all slaves were proclaimed free. All the slave owners relationships to their slaves was now employer to hired laborer.

    After the civil war slaves were able to celebrate their new freedoms. Many slaves demanded education and so many black colleges were built. When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated the new president Andrew Johnson Organized a reconstruction plan known as the presidential reconstruction. Most republicans disliked Johnson's idea and decided to have him impeached. Even though slaves were free they weren't treated equal and the Ku Klux Klan was created to terrorize African Americans with violence.
