Civil War Events

  • Fort Sumter

    This was the first event of the Civil War. It occured when the Confederacy wanted to capture Fort Sumter in the Bay of Charleston. This was about a two day bombardment resulting in zero casualities for the Union.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    In this battle the Union was hoping to capture the major railroad of Manassas, Virginia. They were stopped by a Confederate force and the Union was defeated by the waiting soldiers. This was the first large battle with casualties in the war.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    This was the first battle after the Union moved troops to the west, and the east. The battle was fought as on of the battles of the War in the West. General Grant led his army into Tennessee and continued forward. Confederate forces attacked in an area near Shiloh, resulting in thousands of casualties for both sides making this battle one of the bloodiest of the war. The Union ended up winning this battle.
  • Battle of Antietam

    General Lee was planning to strike Maryland in the Union territory. His planned was foiled by one of his messengers, the messenger acidentally dropped Lee's battle plans and a Union officer picked them up. It turned out that Lee was dividing his forces so General Grant attacked. The battle lasted for one day resulting in a draw.

    Battle of Chancellorsville

    On April 30, 1863 Major General Joseph Hooker reorganized his army on Lee's most vulnerable flank. Lee attacked Hooker's army while they were still in the thick of the wilderness. Jackson with 30,000 soldiers strong, he conceived a plan that dealed with his army to attack the exposed flank. The attack stunned the flank. All of the attacks done by Jackson drove back the Union army into a defensive position. Lee won this battle and is known as one of his best in the war.

    Battle of Gettysburg

    On July 1st the Confederate army of Lee almost accidently found Union calvary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Confederates took upon this and attack the calvary paving the way for the largest battle of the war. The Union won the battle that lasted three days, and destroyed Lee's hopes of continuing north.
  • Fall of Atlanta

    General Sherman took control of the Union army during the fall of Atlanta. Sherman took his troops through Georgia, and burned Atlanta which was a vital railroad junction.
  • Sherman's March

    General Sherman was following the ¨Scorched Earth Policy,¨ first beginning with Atlanta and they tore up houses, railroad tracks, burned buildings and raided everything. The Union forces, forced the confederate army out of their Atlantic Port.
  • Surrender at Appomattox

    General Sherman countinued his burning of cities, and kept seizing lots of cities. Union forces cut Lee of from leading the rest of his Confederate army. General Lee surrended by waving a white flag atop a hill on April 9, 1895. This put an end to the war.
