  • South Carolina secedes from Union

    South Carolina, a state that often threatened to seced finally did. This caused other states to begin seceding as well. This led to the division between the Nation.
  • Lincoln's Inauguration

    Lincolnhad no plans to end slavery in states that had it already existing. He also said that would not accept secession. This highlights his desire of peace.
  • Attack on Fort Sumter

    Confederates attacked Fort Sumter. Anderson surrendered the fort.
  • Robert E. Lee becomes Commander

    Lee decides to join the South instead of the North. Thi led to many victories due to his ingenous strategies. The south also had many generals due to the Mexican-American War.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    The First Battle of Bull Run was the first major land battle of the war. It occurred in Virginia. 28,450 Union forces from DC attempted to surprise 32,230 Confederate troops. The Union suffered nearly 3,000 casualties. Jackson earned his title "Stonewall Jackson".
  • Battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack

    This was the first naval battle between two iron clad ships. The Monitor was a Union ship while the Merrimack was Confederate. It demonstrated the potential of ships made with metal.
  • The Battle of Shiloh

    An attack on Union forces by the South. The Union soldiers were attacked by artillery. They won due to reinforcements. Confederate troops retreated in the end.
  • Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry fell into the hands of the Confederates. Lee lost a battle nearby because he cut his forces in two but he manged to obtain Harper's Ferry in the end.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Known for being the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Antietam. The Union outnumbered the attacking confederates and claimed victory.
