  • Lincoln gets inaugurated

    Lincoln gave his inauguration speech on this day. He did not want the South to secede but it happened anyway.

  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    This was the first official battle of the Civil war, which occured after the South seceded. The fight started after the Union failed to leave its possessions at Charleston Harbor. There were no deaths and the Confederates ended up winning.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    This battle was near Manassas, Virginia with the Confederates led by Beaureguard and the Union was led by General McDowell. The Union was easily defeated because they fled the battlefield after panicking in the middle of the fight.
  • Monitor and Merrimack

    These were two ships that were involved in one of the first naval battles in the Civil War. They were covered in iron and the Monitor was owned by the Union and Merrimack was owned by the Confederacy. The fight was not decisive as it ended in a draw.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    General Johnston led the Confederates and General Grant led the Union. The Union won at the expense of 1300 soldiers and 1100 died for the Confederates.
  • 2nd Battle of Bull Run

    The South won this war with Robert Lee as the general and John Pope for the North. More soldiers were used and Pope used a strategy that forced the South to play a hefty defensive war.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    In this battle, Robert Lee led the Confederacy and Ambrose Burnside led the Union. The Union had approximately twice as many casualities as the Confederates, so it was an easy win for the Confederate win.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Lincoln ordered the emancipation of slaves from all states. It technically was useless because te Union could not control the Confederacy's decisions in regards to slavery.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Hooker led the Union and Lee led the Confederates. Lee won with a smaller army. He had less casualties compared to the Union.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    This 3 day battle resulted in a Union victory. The Union was led by Meade and the Confederates were led by Lee. It was a turning point and clearly showed that the North was going to win the war.
  • Battle of Fort Pillow

    The Confederaes massacred many Black troops. This showed the rebellious nature of the South and that they were not well past the slavery mindset.
  • Battle of the Wilderness

    Grant fought Lee's army in Virginia in this battle.Grant technically had the advantage throughout the entire battle and was winning, but he left the field and decided to attack somewhere else.
  • Battle of Spotsylvania

    This battle began after Grant left the battle in the Wilderness. He faced Lee again and both sides engaged in war. The problem however, was that both sides lost around 32,000 men, so the battle essentially ended as a stalemate.
  • Battle of Cold Harbor

    This was one of Rpbert Lee;s more successful campaigns on land. The Union lost thousands of soldiers and the Confederates escaped with an easy win.
  • Lincoln's reelection

    Lincoln's reassured the Union that removing slavery was a primary objective of te Civil War. This is one of the reasons why he was reelected.
  • Battle of Nashville

    This was fought in Tennessee. The Union won because of its excellend strategy on the offensive side.
  • Lee Surrenders

    Lee formally surrenders to the Union general, Ulysses Grant. This confirmed the win of the Civil War for the Union after 4+ years of intense fighting.
  • Lincoln Gets Assassinated

    John Wilkes Booth shoots Lincoln 5 days after the War ends. Lincoln died afterwards. Many people speculate that Booth was trying to revive the Confederacy out of frustration due to the war's end.
  • The end of Slavery

    The 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were passed. These laws ended slavery and identified them as citizens, but only males who were citizens could vote.
  • Radical Republican Reconstruction

    This form of Reconstruction supported better education systems to reform the nation. It was harsher to the South, but ultimately it helped the nation.
