    the union general Irvin McDowell led his army to Manassas to battle the confetiret army led by general Pierre Beauregard. hundreds of spectater from the north came to watch because they thought it was going to be a short battle. the North were driving to cofetirets back. thats when thomas jackson came and the union advance stoped and thomas jackson got the nickname stonewall jackson. The Confederates won they had about 2000 casultes compared to the 2700 of the north
  • Ft. Henry

    Ft. Henry
    General Grant of the Union sent war ships up rivers in the south defeating all their river forts, the most important being Ft. Henry. This let ships go as far north as Alabama.
  • The Battle of Shiloh

    The Battle of Shiloh
    The south was forced to retreat but Grant followed then waited for more troops to come. The South attacked before they could get there. They battled all day and night. By morning northern reinforcments came and the north won. This was one of the bloodiest battles in the war. 11,000 Confederets lost their lives and 13,000 Union fighters lost their lives.

    As union war ships advanced rebel ships tried to ram and sink them. They did succeed in sinking one ship. The north however did take New Orleans.

    This battle lasted a week. General Lee sent people to spy on the Union troops and then moved his troops to their positon. The battle went on for seven days and the number of casulties was horrific with 15,849 for the Union and 20,000 for the South. Although the South had more casualties, the North was forced to retreat and the South won.

    This was a battle fought in the North. It was also the bloodiest battle in American history. By night fall 23,000 men were dead. The south was forced to retreat. General McClellan did not follow to finish them off. This made Lincoln so mad that he fired him.
