    Settlers of both pro-slavery and anti-slavery sides armed themselves and fought with eachother for Missouri to be either a free or slave state. the north was against slavery but the south wanted it to expand.

    This was to outlaw slavery in any territory in the U.S. could gain from the War with Mexico. Southerners wanted more slave states and the north wanted to stop it.

    The compromise of 1850 was an attempt to calm the political sitiation. Because of the war with mexico there was a debate on wether the new states should be free or slave states. southern states wanted the new states to be slave states and the northern states wanted it to be a free state.

    Preston Brooks was offended by Senator Charles Sumner's speech that talked in a harmful way against brooks cousin and North Carolina. Preston took charge and beat sumner over the head with a cane. southerners gave him new canes and wrote letters of joy towards his actions. The north found Brooks' actions to be apualing.

    When Dred Scotts owner died Scott argued that he was a free man beccause he lived in a slave free territory. The cse eventually made it to supreme court which they ruled against Scott. The souths range for slavery was expanded.

    John Brown and eighteen followers captured the arsenal at Harpers Ferry. U.S. marines attacked Brown and captured him and six men. The south hated John brown and felt he deserved to get hung and the north mourned his death.

    The southerners wanted slavery in the platform. But northerners supported popular sovereignty. the southerners wanted John Breckinridge of Kentucky. The northerners backed Stephen A. Douglas.

    Because of Abraham Lincoln winning the election the southern states withdrew fromn the Union. Northerners thought that the secession was unconstitutional.
