At 4:30am Lincolns attempt to resupple the fort was put to a end when Confederate troops stopped the boats and attacked the fort from 3/4 vantage points. Eventually the fort was surrendered and this was considered the beginning of the Civil War.

On July 21, 1861, Manassas Junction, Virginia the Condederates were able to break the Unions right flank and send the Union on a panic retreat although the Union army was 35,000 compared to the Confederates army of 20,000.

Lee and Pope had a firefight the day of the 28th, but that night Pope decided to attack Lee but Lees forces held off Popes and there were heavy casulities on both sides. This battle was a draw with both sides having heavy losses.

On March 8, 1862, from her berth at Norfolk, the Confederate ironclad Virginia steamed into Hampton Roads where she sank Cumberland and ran Congress aground. On March 9, the Union ironclad Monitor having fortuitously arrived to do battle, initiated the first engagement of ironclads in history. The two ships fought each other to a standstill, but Virginia retired.

Lee and McClellan met at Sharpsburg, Maryland near Antietam Creek and faced off. McClellan stopped Lee from advancing further north and although the union won, it was at a high cost. There were over 22,000 casulities between the 2 armies. It is the bloodies single day battle to this day.

Lee marched his 75,000 troop army into PA planning on a dispirting loss for the Union army. But the union army of 90,000 held up on Lees invasions and stopped Lee from advancing.
