    It angered southerners that Lincoln would not let slavery expand. They reacted by withdrawing from the Union. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, and Texas seceded to form the Confederacy.

    The Confederates turned a union ship into an ironclad called the Virginia. After it sunk two union ships, the Union built an ironclad called the Monitor. Neither ship was seriously damaged, but the Monitor forced the Virginia to withdraw.

    This was a military order that freed slaves only in areas controlled by the Confederacy. Lincoln issued the proclamation on September 22, 1862 and went into effect January 1, 1863.

    The battle happened in Virginia, near Fredericksburg. The plan was to launch an attack on Fredericksburg but the troops took a defensive position at Chancellorsville. The confederacy won.
