Ulysses S. Grant was the Union general who led them into this battle. This battle lasted two long days. On the first the Confederates tried to push back the Yankees until they hit the swamps and Marshs. Also General Johnston was killed during the first day of fighting.

This document created by Abraham Lincoln was designed to free all the slaves in the rebel states. This includes all southern states that succeded. This document, however, did not free anybody because the south was not apart of the union at that time so the North had no control over what happened. This document also allowed slaves in the states that were still in the union but had slaves. The Border states threatened succession if the north took away there slaves.

This Battle was known as the turning point of the war for the North. This conflict made the South never return to its former glory giving the North the opportunity to come back. It is one of the biggest and most important battles of the Civil War.

This speech was given by Abraham Lincoln 4 months after the Battle of Gettysburg. In the speech he talks about American equality and and the preservation of the union. He wants the country to start over new as a whole. He talks about the seccession crisis and how badly it had affected the country. This speech is probably the most memorable speech in American history.

When Lee realizes that he can't win this war he surrenders to Grant at the Appomattox. Then the union Army takes him to the McLean house to negotiate what will happen to him. He walked out of the house looking at his men with tears streaming doen his face and said "Men, we have fought through this war together. I have done the best I could for you."
