Lincoln appointed George McClellan to head and organize the army of the East. -
Battle of Shiloh/Pittsburgh Landing
Union Grant had 40,000 troops in the West headed South to Corinth,Mississippi which was an important railroad junction. Union forces camped at Pittsburgh close to Shiloh a church. Additional forces came to help the Union. Confederates striked first led by P.G.T. and Johnston lasted 2 days and it was very bloody. The Union won by a narrow victory. Together more than 230.000 casualties. -

Battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg
Lee split his army into 4 groups trying to confuse McClelan about his size. Lee then reassembled his troops and then the battle began. About 6,000 soilders were killed and 17,000 were badly wounded. It was the deadliest day of fighting during the war. IT was a great Victory for the Union because Lee retreated all the way back to Virginia. -
Emancipation Proclamation issued
It was a decree freeing all emslaved people in a rebel territory. It actually never freed sn enslaved person. It never did because he could not do anything about slavery in the South. It did have an impact though because the Gov. said slavery was wrong and if the Union won slavery would be banned forever. -
Battle of Gettysburg
It started at 5;30 A.M.. Outnumbered UNion troops retreated to Cemetery ridge. Reinforcements ariived for both sides on the second day. The Southeren forces tried to dislodge the Union from hills called Round Top and Little Round Top. IT did not work. That night Meade made a great decision decision not to retreat and Lee also decided to destory the Union Army. That didnt work and the Union won. -
Gettysburg Address
Was when the soilders National Cemetery was dedicated to Gettysburg. Former Gov. of Mass. Edward Everett delieverd a 2 hour speech. Then Linclon spoke for 2 minutes. In 272 words he honered those soilders that fought. "These dead shall not have died in vain... Goverment of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from Earth."The reactions were mixed but most people liked it. -
Grant named General of Army of Patomac
Lincoln put Grant in charge of the Union forces. Grant made the plan to kill the Confederate forces. -
Assassination of Lincoln
John Wilkes Both assassinated Lincoln at a play called Our American Cousin and he killed him at the funnist part of the play. He did that try and repowered the South but he killed it.
