    Abraham Lincoln's administration would not surrender the fort to the Confederates, Jefferson Davis decided to take action. Davis hoped that in seizing command of Fort Sumter he could drive the northerners out of the South and help South Carolina secede to the Confederate States of America.

  • Bull Run

    It was the first real major conflict of the American Civil War. A Union army, commanded by General McDowell, fought 33,000 Confederates under General Beauregard.
  • The battel of Shiloh

    Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant, including William T. Sherman, camped on the Tennessee River at Pittsburg Landing, Tenn. (near Shiloh Church), in preparation for an offensive. Confederate forces under A.S. Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard attacked, surprising the Union troops and forcing their retreat, though Johnston was mortally wounded.

    A creek of north-central Maryland emptying into the Potomac River. The bloody and inconclusive Civil War Battle of Antietam (or Sharpsburg, as it is often called in the South) was fought along its banks

    This document was read by Abraham Lincoln it stated that slaves were free.
  • Chanclersville

    Confederate victory by Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson in May 1863, before the latter's mortal wounding by his own side (possibly deliberate).
