    Battle of Fort Sumter
    Fort Sumter(April 12- April 14 1861)
    On April 12, Fort Sumter was attacked by the Union. Abraham Lincoln took office in March, he was faced to evacaute Fort Sumter. Anderson was forced to surrender after thrity-four hours of shelling on April 12. On April 14 the fort was evacauted by federal troops, they marched out waving the
    American flag to a gun salute.

    First Battle of Bull Run ( July 21 1861)
    McDowell's army struck on July 21 hitting the enemies across Bull Rull. Over two hours, 10,000 federals pushed back 4,500 rebels across the Warrington turnpike and up the Henry House Hill. By 4 o'clock in the afternoon both sides had an equal number of men on the field, 18,000 aproximatley. The first Battle of Bull Run was called First Manassas in the South.

    Histories first duel between ironclad warships began on March 9. The engagement was part of the Confederates effort to break the Union blockade of Southern ports. The battle began a new era in naval warfare. The Northern built Merrimack was salvaged by the Confederates from the Norfolk navy yard. The Virginia's success marked an end to the day of wooden navies and thrilled the South and raised the false hope of the Union blockade that may be broken.

    Shiloh ( April 6- April 7 1862)
    The second great engagement of the American Civil War was the Battle of Shiloh or the Battle of Pittsburgh Landing. On April 6 The Union came out with a victory because the Confederates could not hold their postions and were forced back; there was more than 23,000 deaths on both sides though.The battle was over on April 7, depsite the Northern troops and reinforcements for the South rallying. In 1864 The Shiloh National Military park was built to commemorate this.

    Antietam ( September 16- September 18, 1862)
    On Sept 17 Generals Lee and McClellan fought by Antietam creek in the first battle to be fought on northern soil of the American Civil War. The first hours of the fight were indecisive but then there was a series of head on attacks to Lee's center.Which later was followed by attacks on his right sidebut they were stopped by Confederate reinforcements whom were late. The Union took this battle as a victory because Lee withdrew on September 18.

    Fredericksburg(December 11- December 15 1862)
    Nov 7 Lincoln put Burnside in place for McCellan, Burnside acted quickly to put a large force in Virginia and General Lee reacted by rushing his troops in. Burnside crossed the Rappahannock wiht over 120,000 troops on Dec 11. On Dec 13 Burnside ordered his left wing to attack Lee's right side commanded by Jackson. There was no change in position by nightfall. Fredericksburg battle was a defeat for the Union and a turning point for the Confederates.

    Chancellorsville (April 30- May 6 1863)
    This battle could possibly be General Robert E, Lee, Confederate, greatest victory in the American Civil War. Lee faced forces twice the size of his but he split his in two and came out on top. Jackson and 30,000 men followed the route that led them to Hooker's weak right flank on May 2 and the attack began. The most intense attack was on May 3 because Hooker started to defend against Lee, but not enough, May 6 lost 17,278 men and Lee only lost 12,826.

    Gettysburg(July 1- July 3 1863)
    Lee assembled his army in Gettysburg, 34 miles away from Harrisburg, Pennsyvannia and a deffensive line starting at Cemetery Ridge to Little Round Top. The brutal fighting didnt start unti 4 pm July 2 and lasted several hours. Then on July 3 Union forces pushed back the Confederates threat against Culp's Hill after a seven hour firefight which they regained their strong positon. The North was rejoicing while the South was mourning.

    Vicksburg(May 18- July 4 1863)
    After the spring of 1862 Vicksburg became the Confederates key point of their deffense of the Mississippi River. After many fails Grant concieved a plan to take the city by approaching from the east. On May 3 Grant reached the Grand Gulf and didnt allow the army of Confederates to link up with the Vicksburg forces. May 18 Grant arrived in Vicksburg and by July 4 Pemberton surrendered the city due to starvation. This started a turning point in the war.

    Chickmauga (September 18- September 20 1863)
    Confederates and Unions were fighting over control for the key railroad center of Chattanooga Tennessee. The two armies met in the woods lining the banks chickmauga creek on September 19. On Sept 20 rebels busted through a gap in Federal lines which made the retreat north towards Chattanooga. Thomas helped Grant reverse the results so they got a victory over the Confederates.

    Battle of the Wilderness(May 5-May 7 1864)
    President Lincoln appointed Ulysses S. Grant to lead all the Union armies as chief. Richard Ewell led the Confederate corpes. The early morning of May 5th the Battle of the Wilderness began. Trees and undergrowth made it extremely hard to move in and it also negated the effect of both artillery and cavarly which made fighting fierce and chaotic. On May 6, Winfield Scott Hancock led the Union corpes. The Confederates won but the Union continued on.

    The Battle of Spotsylvannia
    Spotsylvannia ( May 9- May 21 1864)
    After the war of the Wilderness the Confederates and Union met at Spotsylvannia. General J.E.B. Stuart's famed Confederate cavalry made a stand against the Union at a nearby Yellow Tavern, north of Richmond on May 11. Grant shifted his army and looked for weak points in the Confederate line as days of heavy rain followed.

    Shermin's March ( September 2- December 21 1864)
    On September 2 General Shermin's troops captured Atlanta, a railroad hub and the industrial center of the Confederacy. Confederate cavalry started a skirmish with Union soldiers on November 22 but 650 confederates were killed verses the 62 Union soldiers. Shermin's troops arrived on December 21 in Savannah, which was approximately 3 weeks after Atlanta, to find that the city was undefended when they got there.

    Petersburg(June 9, 1864 - April 2, 1865)
    The seven Southern states that seceded from the Union already claimed all U.S. forts and arsenals within its territory by 1861. When Lincoln was president he was threathened with the Confederates demand of evcatuation of the fort. After refusal South fired at them on April 12 which made Anderson surrender after 34 hours of shelling. Fort Sumter was evcatuated on April 14

    John Wikes Booth, Lincoln's killer, was living in the North depsite his Confederate sympathies. On April 14 Booth planned to kill Lincoln, Andrew Johnson and William H. Seward to put the government in disarray. At 10:15 a shot was fired into the back of lincoln's head by Booth and then he jumped onto the stage and screamed "Sic semper tyrannis!" and fled from Washington on hroseback. Union troops killed Booth on April 26 at a farmhouse where he was hiding.
