  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    Battle of Fort Sumter
    On April 12th-13th, 1861 Fort Sumter was attacked by Confederate troops. Lincoln sent a letter to General Beauregard stating that he was sending supplies and not to attack because the supplies did not include ammunition or troops. However the Confederate troops did not obey and they still opened fire. After hours of battle and not a troop injured Major Anderson of the Union army surrendered the fort to the Confederates.
  • Battle of First Bull Run

    Battle of First Bull Run
    This was the first major land battle of the armies in Virginia. On the 21st, McDowell crossed at Sudley Ford and attacked the Confederate left flank on Matthews Hill. Late in the afternoon, Confederate reinforcements extended and broke the Union right flank. By July 22, the weakened Union army reached the safety of Washington. This battle convinced the Lincoln administration that the war would be a long and costly affair and as a result of the battle it was a win for the Confederate army.

    The Battle of Hamtpon Roads is the most famous naval battle of the Civil War. This battle is famous because it was the first battle with the first two ironclad warships. Neither the Union or Confederate could prove that they had the first ironclad warship. The result of this battle was a victory for the Union.

    Battle of Shiloh
    On April 6th, Confederate forces led by General Johnston attacked Union General Grant's army at Pittsburg Landing. Confederates lost their leader when General Johnston was killed by a stray bullet. Total 23,000 people were killed and 13,000 were from the Union and 10,000 were from the Confederates. The result of this battle was a win for the Union.

    On September 16th Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan lead the Union Army against Robert E. Lee’s and his army. On September 17th Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker's made a pwerful assault and attacked Robert E. Lee's left flank and that started the battle of Antietam, No one really won but the Union claimed it as a victory.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    Battle of Fredericksburg
    The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought on December 11-15. It was one of the largest and deadliest battles of the Civil War. There were around 200,000 soldiers who fought in this battle, which was the most amount of men used in a single Civil War battle. The result of the battle was a victory for the Confederate army.

    Battle of Chancellorsville
    On April 30th 1683 the Confederate's attacked Chancellorsville. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson settled upon a highly aggressive plan that would march Jackson's forces around the Union positions and onto that exposed flank. At 5:20 pm, Jackson’s line surged forward in an overwhelming attack that crushed the Union XI Corps. Jackson was mortally wounded by his own men. This battle is considered by many historians to be Lee’s greatest victory.

    On July 1st-3rd, the town of Gettysburg was attacked by the Confederacy. It was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, around 51,000 people were killed. General E. Lee brought 75,000 men and the Union had 97,000.
  • Siege of Vicksburg

    Siege of Vicksburg
    In May and June of 1863, Major General Ulysses S. Grant’s armies attacked Vicksburg, infesting the city and trapping a Confederate army commanded by Lieutenant General John Pemberton. On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after long siege operations. Resulting in a win for the Union army.

    Battle of Chickamauga
    On April 18th, Confederate troops started to march north when they ran into Union troops. Fighting began early in the morning on the 19th, and Bragg’s men hammered but did not break the Union line. Fighting continued for the next day and soon the Union retreated to Chattanooga while the South occupied the surrounding areas. This battle was a victory for the Confederate army.

    Battle of Spotsylvania
    After Grant's 1864 campaign against Rober E. Lee had ended in defeat. His new plan was now to try to get past General Lee's right flank. Grant's wanted to win quick victorys against General Lee's army. After the battle Lee lost around 12,000 men and Grant lost around 20,000. The outcome for the battle was a win for Lee.

    Battle of Wilderness
    On the morning of May 5, 1864, the Union troops attacked Ewell’s troops. on the Orange Turnpike. Fighting was fierce but inconclusive as both sides attempted to maneuver in the dense woods. Darkness stopped the fighting, and both sides rushed forward reinforcements. A devastating Confederate flank attack in Hamilton’s Thicket occured when Lt. Gen. James Longstreet was wounded by his own men. However, the result of this battle was a draw.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Sherman's March to the Sea
    Sherman's March to the Sea was a destructive campaign beginning in Atlanta on November 15th and ending in Savannah on December 21st. Union general William T. Sherman abandoned his supply line and marched across Georgia to the Atlantic Ocean to prove to the Confederate population that its government could not protect the people from invaders. Sherman captured all the food supplies as he was marching through the march.

    The siege of Petersburg was about 19 separate actions between June, 1864, and the end of the siege with the battle of Five Forks and the final assaults in April, 1865. The first action that started the siege was the petersburg assaults which occured June 15-18 1864 the last action was the final assaults on April 2 1865.
  • Lincoln's Assasination

    Lincoln's Assasination
    On April 14th, 1865 Lincoln went to see the play Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre. During the play one of the actors, John Wilkes Booth, entered Lincoln's box he was seated in and shot him in the back of the head. After he shot Lincoln he stabbed Henry Rathbone in the arm and ran. However, Lincoln didn't die instantly, he died on April 15th at 7:22 AM.
