  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter

    Confederate victory. Lincoln was demanded to evacuate the fort, he either could resupply and risk starving out. Or he could abandon and disunion. Lincoln tried, but before the supplies arrived they were forced to evacuate. Anderson was forced to surrender after 34 hours of fire.
  • First Bull Run

    First Bull Run
    July 21, 1861
    This battle met at Manassas, Virginia. Both sides planned to attack each other with majority of their armies. The Confederates began to realize that the Union's army was going to try and attack their left side. So, while the Union was trying to do this, the Confederates were able to get enough troops to attack the right side of the Union. The Confederates did not pursue with anymore troops.
  • Hampton Roads

    March 8, 1862- March 9 1862
    Inconclusive. Durring this battle, there were tons of casualties. There was about 433 of which 409 of them were a part of the Union. The Confederate ironclad Virginia steamed into Hampton Roads where they sank Cumberland and ran the Congress aground. These two ships fought each other, but later Virginia retired. Neither side took a win for this battle.
  • Shiloh

    April 6, 1862- April 7, 1862
    This battle took place in Shiloh, Tennesee. This battle was led by General Johnston for the Confederates and for the Union, General Grant. Shiloh took place at the Pittsburg Landing and the Union was not prepared. Even though they were not prepared, they were still able to hold them until they brought more troops. This ended in a victory for the Union troops, but over 20,000 men died. About 13,000 of them were from the Union.
  • Antietam

    The outcome of this battle was inconclusive, but the North won a stragetic advantage. There was just about 23,000 troops that died. This battle took place in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The defensive plan for the Confederacy was to see if they could get into the United States Territiory. Everyone had thought that the state of Maryland was going to move places and switch from being in the Union and join the Confederacy.
  • Fredericksburg

    December 11, 1862- December 15, 1862
    The outcome of the battle of Fredricksburg was a Confederate Victory. Again, there were a lot of casualties durring this war also. Just about 18,000 of the troops were casualties, which around 14,000 of the troops were Union. Burnside was now in command of the Army of Potomac. There were four generals killed from both sides durring this battle. Burnside initiated a new offensive in January of 1863.
  • Siege of Vicksburg

    Siege of Vicksburg
    May 18, 1863- July 4, 1863
    The Siege of Vicksburg took place right in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The outcome of this battle ended up with a Union Victory. Nearly 20,000 troops died, and half were the Union and the other half were the Confederates. The Confederacy was pretty much split in half with Grant's plan, in which he had successions in the West with a boost in his reputation.
  • Chancellorsville

    April 30, 1863- May 6, 1863
    This battle, as well as some others, also took place in Virginia. The battle of Chancellorsville ended with nearly 24,000 casulties, which nearly 14,000 of them were from the Union. The Confederates scroed yet another victory for themselves. This battle was to be considered one of Lee's greatest victories. Stonewall Jackson lost his life during this war, which was one of the South's main strategic minds. The fighting of this battle was very sporadic for the day.
  • Gettysburg

    The battle of Gettysburg was one of the most costliest battles of the whole entire Civil War based on the number of Casualties. With a time span of three days, nearly 52,000 troops were dead, wounded, captured, or missing. This resulted in a win for the Union. This was a turning point in the war for South. There retreat and teeible losses led them to this outcome. Knowing this, the South had to abandon its attempts to take the war up North.
  • Chickamauga

    September 18, 1863- September 20, 1863
    The battle of Chickamauga took place in Georgia. This battle ended with a win for the Confederates. Around 34,000 troops were dead in this war. Majority of them were Confederates, but the Union had about 15,000 dead. The Confederates won the battle, but this didn't really help them get to far. The Union had retreated to Chatonooga, instead of focusing their attacks there. Lincoln had time to replace Rosecrans with Gen. Grant who brought reinforcements.
  • Wilderness

    May 5, 1864- May 7, 1864
    President Lincoln promoted Grant to become the Lieutenant General and gave him the commands of all of the Union armies. Grant planned to attack Lee's army of Northern Virginia from three different directions. Near the end of the day, a brush fire started and created and left troops wounded or killed. The Union lost nearly 18,000 troops, while the Confederates only resulted in about 11,000. The Union soldiers cheered as the South was leaving the battle field.
  • Spotsylvania

    May 8, 1864- May 21, 1864
    The battle of Spotsylvania took place in Virginia. The outcome of this battle was inconclusive and resulted with many casulties. Totaling with about 30,000 troops dead, 18,000 of them were the Union's. At the begginning of this battle, Grant decided to disingage and continue his campaign towards Richmond. Each of the successful battles that Grant met on this advance resulted in many casulaties, giving him the nickname "Butcher Grant."
  • Siege of Petersburg

    June 15 1864- June 18, 1864
    Without being able to advance, the general of the Army of Potomac ordered his troops to do the opposite, or dig in the oppostite of the Confederates. Within these four days of fighting the Union losses around 2,000 troops and around 9,000 wounded, and about 1,500 were captured or missing. The Confederates did not lose nearly as many. They only lost about a total of 200 killed, 3,000 wounded and nearly 900 missing or captured. The Union won, and Lee was in hiding.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Sherman's March to the Sea
    September 2, 1864- December 21, 1864
    The location of this march was from Atlanta, Georgia to Savannah, Georgia. The Union won a victory. Only 3,000 were killed, in which 2,100 of them were Union soldiers. Sherman had presented to Lincoln with Savannah, Georgia, which he calls a "Christmas Gift." He striked the heart of the Confederacy. With all of his victories along with all of the other commanders for the Union were the begginning to the end for the Confederacy.
  • Lincoln's Assassination

    Lincoln was one of the most famous Presidents of the United States of America. He lead the Union troops through battles and he won a lot of victories. No one knows who assassinated him, but historians are still trying to figure it out. Lincoln served 2 terms for Presidency, but got assassined soon after the election of the second term. He had two states enter while in office, West Virginia, and Nevada. The Civil War and The Emancipation Proclamation were major events.
